Just 2 more to GO! 1916-S and 1921-D

I have been patiently working on a Walking Liberty set, by checking the "junk" 90% boxes at the LCS and some coin shows, for about 3 years. 2 weeks ago, scored a 16-D in fine for $12 (melt), a 17-D Obverse, a 1921 in AG, also for $12. Some coins are definately AG-03 or maybe in a F-02, but there are several AU's in the book also. They are stored in a Dansco 7160 album that was a glorious $2 at a coin show. 1938-D came a little over a year ago, in a 50% off box at a coin show, for $10, marked as a 38-P. Dealer just laughed and said good luck.

Also bought a fairly complete run of Barber halves, with a lot of the semi-keys, also for melt 2 weeks ago, most a good/VG, with some AG's in the mix. They were all in 2x2's, in the junk box. It looked like someone had taken an album and just punched it out. Now I need to find a cheap 7150 album.

    Sounds like a fun project.
I recently picked up a circ 38-d on the bst and was intending to stick it in an album I'm working on.
In the end, I tossed it in with a submission and now it's in a PCGS VF20 holder.

Do a WTB on the BST for that album.

Nice scores and congrats on getting so close!

In the last year I've bought two different 1916-S Walkers in AG or so fairly cheap. Not quite for melt though, but not a ton more and well below half of the $85 greysheet price for good. So it's possible. I could even hook you up with one of them if you want, unless you want to be able to find one out in the wild on your own!! Might need a bit more luck finding a 1921-D that cheap though, but it's not unheard of either!

I've got a few 21D in lower grades if you are interested. Send me a PM and we can discuss. Mine are graded PCGS FA2 and AG3 and a couple raw. I would PM you, but you have that function off.

It doesn't get any better than what you are doing MMB. Your post sent me back to the "good old times" when I use to pull coins from my uncle in the late 60's and early 70's (he was a milkman that collected cash for his deliveries). I miss those days.
  • Hello Mustangmanbob-----A man after my old heart. I'll be 66 next month and all my life I have loved the half dollars----especially the Walkers. Folks sometimes these days loose sight of the word Frugality when they collect. Guys are seemingly trying for the BIG sets for a registry. However, hunting like you are doing it can be a great deal of FUN----and rewarding too.

Recently, I got the bug to half dollar roll hunt again. So far, I have gone through 3,000 bucks worth of MODERN Kennedy halves. I have added 20 coins into my Whitman Album---in addition to finding a 1974D---DDO

Some would say that it is a waste of good time. Well, MAYBE. But, I'm having a lot of FUN doing the searching. Have found a little silver in the process. And, it has cost me virtually NOTHING. The bank ladies have been VERY NICE----as long as I don't return those halves to their branch bank.

Hope you find the last two----although they are indeed hard to come by at a melt price. But patience has its rewards. Bob [supertooth]

Walkers are great coins.... one of the best of U.S. coins.... good luck on your hunt. Cheers, RickO
  • I like well worn Walkers, sounds like fun. I have everything in my book from a 16s that you can only read the date with the right "tilt" in the light, to some gorgeous uncs, I like it that way, it's nice to think about all those coins and what they purchased way back when. I still need the 21d. Good luck.
