Collecting coins-11000 post giveaway

MICHAELDIXONMICHAELDIXON Posts: 6,571 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have had many sets through the years and have sold many coins. This year I decided to "lighten" my load and focus on something different. First it was Proof Liberty nickels, which didn't inspire me; then it was Proof 3c nickels and they didn't inspire me. Of all things, I reverted back to some simple modern sets: Franklin halves (BU), Eisenhower dollars (BU/PR), Anthony Dollars (BU/PR) and Presidential Dollars (BU/PR). Not only am I enjoying the chase, I enjoy looking at the coins and it has reinvigorated my desire to collect. Many of you know I do not like going to coin shows unless I am the promoter. Well, I have the desire to go to Baltimore at the end of the month to find some coins for my sets. This has shown me that you don't have to have alot of money, you have to have the passion.
.
So...what set are you working on?

    Haven't had much time to look at coins, but I'm still plugging away at the last few holes of my Capped Bust Dime die marriage set;
    additions, upgrades, and registry set.

I too have lightened my load recently, consolidating my collections to just a couple areas.

1946 Iowa commems in PCGS plastic, MS 60 - 68. Approaching it two ways, already slabbed coins and raw coins to submit. I've got 64 to 67 covered, have one raw I purchased that I think will go 63. The 68 is tough for me because I don't have a Benjamin Franklin tree with hundred dollar bills hanging off of it growing in my backyard.

Toned silver Commemorative 50 piece set in PCGS AU58 is the target but keep getting off tracked by finding nice looking coins in MS grades. That plus trying to fill holes in my date set of halves keeps it warn out here in the woods.

I'm always on the look out for Franklin material to upgrade my toner business strike set, but haven't found anything for years.

I'm currently working on a 1940 - 1964 toner Washington set in MS66. I'm also working on an 1858 business strike set (mainly no gold), and an 1893 proof cameo set (no gold).

Finally, not a coin set, but a set nonetheless, (and one that I've picked up a fair amount of numismatic material for) is I'm trying to get at least one flown item from every Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space flight.

I'm currently between sets and struggling to find my next inspiration. I just might have to finish my short set of circ cam bust halves...
I have 5 with 4 more to go. They type set album has been a work in progress for about 5 years now.

Congrats on so many posts! Here's a nice Franklin I bought from you many years ago.

I've moved around a bit since getting back into coins some 10 years ago.
Started with SHQs, to help celebrate the birth of my son. Moved into Morgans but was naïve initially and didn't realize the cost of the stoppers...and paying for a new family member image
Then, moved into toned IHC Proofs. Hard to find nice ones for fair prices...still have and still look, but pretty stalled.
A board member, around that time, sent my son some toned Roosevelt dimes (silver). Got my son going on those and we added some more, but nicely toned ones, again, for a fair price, are not easy to find for all years, so, while we still look, it is pretty stalled as well image
Did the Ikes and got bored pretty quickly. Still like them, but got bored.
The Franklins are cool when toned nicely....have a few of those.

The main set I have been working on, that I want to make legacy for my son, is the 1/2c Everyman's set. I chose Everyman, even though some of the later dates are a bit more affordable even in MS63/64 with a nice look, just because the set can be somewhat challenging and yet still have a somewhat consistent appearance (all are circulated, even though, for many of the AU58s, it is hard to tell).
We are now down to a handful to round us out and those would be, of course, the keys and semi-keys (more expensive ones) with a "common" one or two mixed in. The common ones are still unfilled because of my tightening requirements on what we will accept for how the coin looks and the price range. Not going to pay 2x book, when other examples are out there for just a bit over book, and the look isn't that spectacular for the difference.

I've noticed that with the 1/2c coins, there aren't a ton of dealers who consistently have them, or have nice examples...particularly in PCGS. Due to the issues with early copper (porous, cleaning, spotting (carbon), etc) nice examples can be difficult to find.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Congrats on 11,000 I can only wonder all the things you must have seen and learned since joining, I just started a 1936 to 1964 Proof Quarter set, only 32 coins so figured it was a good one to start with. Still have all mom and dads albums that are not complete in case I stray. Enjoy image

Recently, I have had a mid-grade Seated Quarter fever that I can't break. Especially hunting the better dates. This has rekindled a fire that was sort of dwindling.

I find the world coin silver bullion a refreshing avenue also, Panda and Britannias especially. Beautiful coins and bullion to boot.

    Congrats on 11K!

Mercury Dime Varieties - It is a way to have a real challenge, use knowledge and a good eye to Cherrypick and then with a little luck end up with a couple Top Pops...all while NOT competing with the bank accounts of others since I can't do that. Lots of fun! image

When I got into this hobby I started collecting morgan dollars cause they were cool to a newbie. I have been collecting for almost 15 years now and I still remember many of the first coins that I bought. I dabbled in other series, but the morgans were large, lusterous, and very cool to look at. Although I still like them, and buy one on occasion, my focus moved to Washington quarters including errors and varieties. I have a crazy fascination with them, and when I go to a show it is almost always the first thing that I ask about when I go up to a dealer table. The Washington quarters are the fuel for my fire, and it has kept me interested in the hobby for the last several years.

Congrats on the 11k and finding the fuel for your fire.image

Thanks for the chance in the giveaway.

11,000 post is impressive! I am enjoying coins pulled from circulation via CRH so I am all over the place. Yesterday I added a 1986 Statue of Liberty half from a box to my collection. Not really worth much but getting it at face value is fun.
