Several years ago I had the #1 IHC w/varieties registry set. That started an interest in the small cent patterns so I collected about 50 of those as well.

Somewhere along the way, I needed another rabbit trail to run down and became intrigued by civil war tokens struck OVER FE/IHC cents. My goal became to complete a set with the host coins dated 1857-1864.

The "easy" ones are the 1862 and 1863 undertypes. Somewhat tougher are 1861 and 1859. The really tough ones are 1857, 1858, 1860 and 1864. 1856 is unheard for a FE under type. Other host coins can be found with the 1856 under date.

Little did I realize that it would take over 8 years to complete. Steve Tannenbaum would tell me at shows about all the ones he had but they were never for sale. After his untimely death, the really tough ones finally came available through QDB (1857 and 1860 were the stoppers for me).

They are arranged by under date - 1857, 1858 SL and LL through 1864. Some day I'll take the time to get better pics of the host coin features. Enjoy. image
