Hawaii State Numismatic Association Show in Honolulu - Who's Coming?

WTCGWTCG Posts: 8,940 ✭✭✭
I just made the decision to attend this year's Hawaii State Numismatic Association's coin show. It was cheap enough and I haven't been to Hawaii in almost two years. The show will be at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu from Friday November 2 through Sunday November 4. I've been to this show before and I will be there again this year.

There are a few mainland dealers who are considering attending this year. Anybody here planning to go?

Is this typically a good show?

To be truthful it is November in Hawaii, which speaks a lot about the motivation for people to go. The show is about 50 tables or so. Aside from the mainland dealers who attend it is well boursed by many dealers based in Hawaii, who with a few exceptions generally do not set up at shows outside of that state. You'll get the chance to meet some new dealers and see some new coins.

I'll be there. Hoping to do this show every year (this is the first time, though).

Halloween is going crazy in Waikiki tonight.

Nothing for me this year - the huge celebration/party (whatever you call it) caught me by surprise.

About to attempt a hike to Diamond Head and then up the crater. Wish me luck. Of course, I'm doing serious coin work here as well. :-)

How was the show? I miss my good dealer friends Francis, Craig, Vince and Alan! I know you guys aren't around this board, but I hope the show was good.

February show is always the best IMO, followed by this one.

I attended Friday and Saturday. I think there was a little something for everyone. Came away with 5 new bust half varieties, including the 1827 with planchet flaw (the subject of another thread). The convention center is a first class facility, conveniently located at the edge of Waikiki, just down from Ala Moana. I hope the show continues. Nice to learn that several of the dealers have web sites I didn't know about.

I didn't stay for very long but when I was there I noticed a decent crowd (for a Friday in Hawaii) present. The show appeared slightly larger than previous ones and more dealers from outside Hawaii attended this time, granted many didn't set up. I haven't talked to many dealers about the show yet but the feeling I got was most were satisfied.

As for Ian, he looked like his typical, groomed, cool workaholic self. Either he ditched his hike or Diamond Head was too easy for him. Couldn't tell.

Hiking up to Diamond Head from Waikiki was a highlight. Took about three hours round trip. It's much quicker if you catch a cab or drive to the crater and walk from there. The view at the top is amazing.

Show - seemed to be about 60-80 dealers - many from the mainland. Show was extremely well-run and organized. Police were around for security (did not hear of any issues).

We were mostly there to meet existing clients (which we did, although missed seeing one of our very first clients when we launched GC).

We'll be back next year, without fail.

Wanted to add: If you collect Hawaiian coins, there were definitely more around the bourse than mainland shows. A dealer even had a Hawaiian Commem in PCGS MS-66, which you don't often see.

There was a pretty cool collection of Hawaiian currency on display. All the local dealers and show staff were extremely helpful and friendly.
