Today at the coin shop, the dealer pulled out a coin that I was unfamiliar with. The coin was struck at the philadelphia mint for payment for oil from saudi arabia.

Here's a link to some more information on the coins & rationale.

Has anyone seen these?

I bought this on a few months ago. There is also a small size version that was issued after this one that is scarcer.

    Fred,

I did read about the frequency of counterfeits. But are the counterfeits made with real gold, as so with a lot of the 19th century gold coins? What would be a good pick up for detecting a counterfeit. The coin was the small size, .24187 ounce I believe.

    Thanks,

The small size had the same gold content as the British Sovereign while the large size is equivalent to four British Sovereigns. I would consider these bullion rounds rather than actual coins.
