So how difficult can it be to make a die? Wellllll....depends on how high your standards are image ---Sooooo...let's try and make a Sommers Island Sixpence. Only metal around to tinker with was an inch long lathe end is one inch brass rod, flat end dressed and sanded smooth. Roughly sketch out the design and lettering on white paper, flip this over and trace it backwards. Mount brass die securely in vise. Draw on letters and design backwards. Punch in the center with a steel center punch. Using a ball shaped bit on the Dermel carve out the hog. Cut in the letters. Take die out and polish on buffing wheel. Hammer some sheet lead smooth. Polish and then cut around die to make round planchet. Tape onto die to hold in place. Back up with steel plate and put in vise. Really tug at the handle and then a few whacks with the hammer. Now one hour after you dream up this crazy project you have...image.image.image
