Post a coin that you bent the rules on!

Did you step outside your series? Did you pick up a "problem" coin? Or did you pay way to much?

We as collectors all have rules... It's ok to break them every now & then!

I usually don't buy raw coins based on a poor scan.

    This one turned out alright:

Ooooo, I've come sooo close to bending the rules, but I've managed to keep my focus. It would take something truly extraordinary to cause me to buy something out of my series.

It was a risky purchase for a raw coin near 4 figures. Had to soak it for 3 weeks in acetone due to extreme pvc residue on the coin.
Sent it to PCGS after that, not knowing if it would make the grade.

    That is a beauty Weiss!
Here's one of my favorites... it has nothing to do with the rest of my collection.

No idea why I traded for this today. I know nothing about it, just was enamored with the year 1777 and that it was over 200 years old.

Ooooo, I've come sooo close to bending the rules, but I've managed to keep my focus.

my hunch is that almost every specialized collector "stepped out" of some comfort zone when first embarking upon the quest to collect their specialized area; i know i did. while i don't have a picture of the first SC$ that i purchased, i well remember buying it without having the slightest idea what it really was or what that arena really entailed. i was just struck by the design and theme it depicted. little did i know that i was sealing my fate as a collector with an impulse buy!!! image

I generally paid insane money for all of these coins, and they were auctioned for more than doubly insane money. However, one man's insanity is money well spent.

Funny thing, premium quality coins which are largely unobtainable are met with strong bids when they occasionally come out of the woodwork.

Glad I was able to get one of those Mac! I love that large penny and is one of the highlights of the collection.

I stepped outside for that coin and then it grew into something mainstream. One darkside coin from every country I have visited. Many more to go...

Thanks, guys. There is a singular joy in acquiring the very piece that made your heart skip a beat years ago, especially a piece that you remember thinking was so far beyond the realm of possibility. Owning a pop 1 coin--particularly one that is arguably the most beautiful coin ever struck--is a highlight of my life.

i am pretty sure that coin would have caught my eye if i saw it for sale as well. so, i guess, it wouldn't be breaking any rules for me.

    Très bon!

Here's a coin where I stepped out of my specialty. I have since purchased two more Capped Bust Halves. The photo is courtesy of BluCC.
