FINALLY PICKED UP MY WHITE WHALE AT YESTERDAYS SHOW!!

Yup, that's right, the wait is over for me. I finally pulled the trigger and purchased a beautiful 1961 Roger Maris PSA 8. Ive been looking at this card now for about a year and have been waiting for a nice one and I finally saw it about 2 months ago. Dealer turned down my original offer. I stepped up the price but still under his asking so I guess you could say we came to an agreance. Eventually I send it to back PSA to re-holder it but right now I just think its beautiful regardless of the ancient case.

I know this isn't considered a major card for some of the heavy hitters here but for me its huge because I know I will never own a 9 and I wanted the most beautiful and centered 8 that I can get and I believe I found it. Aside from this, I also picked up another card Ive been wanting out of nowehere really - a 1983 Ryne Sandberg PSA 9. Only thing holding the Sandberg back from a 10 is the centering from top to bottom. Otherwise, flawless.

Note: Not sure why my scanner didn't pick up on the "1's" for 1961 on the label but this scanner acts funny sometimes. I thinks its compressing the scans too much. I'm sure I can adjust the settings around but I wont worry about that now.

Forget reholder - send it for a review. Totally worthwhile for the $10.

Congrats, beautiful card! Definitely send it in for review. You could end up with an 8.5

Congrats, Marc. I know you've wanted that card for awhile now and that one is a beauty. And like others have said, send it for review and hope for an 8.5!
2.5 is pretty much my speed.
  • Love it when somebody harpoon's there whale. We need a white whale thread where people throw there whale out and just maybe somebody has one just
floating in there collection. Mine is a 1968 Floyd Little stand up psa 8. Not rare but hard to find.

  • nice centering on the maris. Foo is that white in the back round on the maris print snow? I hope not or that card is overgraded. it looks like there are white print snow lines going across the card.

Do you really have to post this when someone is ecstatic about their new purchase?

yes I do because people are posting that it could bump to a 8.5 that would be true but if those are print snow lines then it might get down graded to a 7

Understood, and I didn't mean to be rude. I just don't want Marc to have his parade rained on as the is a really nice looking card.

  • I hope for OP that is not print snow lines running across the card. foo do not send that card in for a review if the maris has print snow in the back round. Try to exhange for a refund if it dose have that kind of print snow. with that kind of print flaw it should of had a 8 PD or a straight 7
  • Thank you everyone for the comments. I love reading them. Why? Because I'm really excited to have this card as part of my PC and I love being part of this online community and I'm always interested to see what most have to say when it comes to cards. I feel like Ive learned so much over the past year so its all good.

Jarrod - Thanks but Cardcollector is just pointing something out that I did notice yesterday and even pointed it out to another member on this board who I accidentally ran into yesterday but we didn't realize it till today.

Cardcollector - Ive never heard of someone sending a card in to get reviewed only for the grade to come back lower than what it was when they first sent it in so that is the last of my worries. You cant see it with the scan but the ONLY thing keeping this card from being a 9 is the top left corner. Nothing else. Better believe I will send this card for a review once I send it in to get it reholdered. I feel that I know this card better than 85% of the people on this board and to find centering like this is killer. The snow is very minimal compared to other 61 Maris's and PSA I'm sure realizes this and is aware that it is condition sensitive. The surface is as clean as it can get and in person, the card is just spectacular. Thanks for taking the time to check it out and comment however. I appreciate both sides of the spectrum.

FOO I have to disagree with you no way that card can bump with that kind of print snow its not minor from the scan. there are print snow lines running across the card save your money on the review. the print snow buy itself should of kept that card from a 8 . now you want talk about a 9 with that kind of print snow come on FOO are you in denile now about the purchase!!!!!!!!!
  • Foo please dont take my comments about your maris purchase the wrong way. I am just giveing my opinion on the card thats all .

There is a right time and a wrong time for criticism. If Foo had asked "Do you think this card will bump??", that is when you post your response about snow.

When someone sends you a picture of their new baby, do you reply "Jeez, that is a horrible looking child"?

    2 things:

1 - I believe PSA is more qualified than you to make that determination. The fact that its already an 8 just makes you wrong already.

2 - Please quote me where I said it would come back a 9. I believe there's such thing as an 8.5.
  • also just noticed the card has a slight tilt .

you said if not for a touched corner it would grade a 9.

this is whats wrong with your maris

print snow lines running across the card

very slight tilt its very slight but its there

and you admit it has a touched corner

in my opinion that should be a 7 but that just my opinion foo. if it looks good to you then that what matters we all have diffrent tasts when it comes to cards

Foo dont get upset we all make bad purchases on overgraded cards i have done it before to
  • Now its obvious you don't follow directions.

In the words of Yankeeno7 - GFYM
  • wow foo no need to get nasty like that . i am not trying to piss you off. but I dont think you know what nice high grade vintage is suppose to look like BTW GFYS and you need to knew pair of eyes because a blind person would have seen the the print snow on that maris and walked away from the pruchase
  • The scan magnifies any little bit of snow that you might think is there. I saw it in person and it's worthy of an 8.5. The netting in the background makes it appear like there's more snow than there is.
  • you need to knew pair of eyes

I have better eyes than you, I'm sure I have submitted cards that have gotten better grades then the ones you have sent. Oh, and please ...learn how to spell. Again, GFYS AND YM. Now go away already. You've clearly over stayed your welcome. Go get lost on eBay on look for centered 66 topps. Oh, and my most valuable card will destroy your Jordan 9.5. Just saying image

Anywho, moving forward from the troll...

the scanner dose not do that to much. you both got to excited about the card and over looked it just admit it

this is what a nice maris 8 should look like on the front. i didnt buy this card because of the back it got scewed up right border on the back possable trim but the front of the cards looks great. noticed there is no snow at all or fish eyes like the one you have foo

I just read this thread for the first time, and all I can say is wow - I don't know where to begin! Nice card Marc. I would send in for review before you get it reholdered. That way you can kill two birds with one stone.
  • Awesome card buddy!!! Send it in for a review, can't hurt and worth it.

    awesome card and great PU.

As I have lets say quite a few psa 8s and some 9's I feel qualified to say that is an 8 for sure.

    ............with very high eye apeal.

As a yankee team set collector who also would love to own this card ( I need the Maris) that would be a cherished part of my 61 set.

I really can't believe a person would CONTINUE to nit-pick small details about a card like the above comments.

Analagy about the newborn is spot on.

I have a novice question: why does it say "96 Topps" in the holder and not "1961 Topps"?

    Marc...awesome card

Great also to see that I have a new board member to dislike on this fine Sunday morning. Sigh.....some people
  • Thanks to everyone else for the positive comments. I love this card. Its hands down my favorite in my collection and it will be for some time. Some people just don't know how to say something positive or say what they need to say and leave it at that. Again, moving forward - The next one on my list will be Maris's 1959 in a PSA 8. Centering is the key issue with that card so I will be patient as I'm always on the search on eBay. Hope everyone is enjoying this fine Sunday afternoon.

Good stuff Marc...one thing you might want to check on with PSA. I think when you get your card "reviewed" you can request that they put in a new holder for you at no extra charge. I was told that many times they end up cracking the card out when reviewed anyway? Don't remember where I heard this but interested if anyone else has done.

Not sure if it is caused by your scanner, but otherwise an interesting variation on the Sandberg -

the "o" and first "p" in Topps are solid blue.
Always looking for 1993-1999 Baseball Finest Refractors and1994 Football Finest Refractors.

"Must these Englishmen Live That I Might Die? Must They Live That I Might Die?" - The Blue Oyster Cult
  • all of you must be blind that maris is not right for the grade. also has two fish eyes. so let me get this right a card with the following flaws is a 8

Print snow line across the card
    fish eyes
    touched corner
    slight tilt

Foo grow some balls and resub the card raw then if u feel it would grade a 8.5 you wont because you know its going to come back a 7 or 7.5 if u did.
  • I'm sorry that your life sucks and you feel the need to bring others down for absolutely no reason. Everyone on here already knows your a douche. Keep digging that hole buddy.
