Did you ever have this happen on eBay?

A buyer made an offer to me on Monday 10/1 to buy a game used bat I am selling. After thinking on it for a couple hours, I accepted. It doesn't fit my collection any longer and the price was close to what I was targeting....so O.K Three days, 2 invoices and email sent to him/her later and I have had no contact of any kind. Then tonight I get a one sentence email asking me to wait until NEXT Friday for pmt.

This is a new one for me. I've been on eBay since 1998 and have never had a buyer do this. Any of you run into this? I haven't responded yet but am inclined to simply contact eBay and cancel the sale so I get a fee refund and relist the bat. I'm not sure why someone would make an offer on an item they aren't prepared to pay for but my instinct on this is I will never see the deal completed with this person.

In any event, it's a great bat that will eventually find a home and I am not missing meals because of it so there isn't major urgency on my part. However, why wait a week to relist it and miss a potential legit buyer?

Your thoughts on this are appreciated.

  • I had an almost identical situation and since the buyer had good feedback (58 and all positive) I waited. Buyer went through with the deal 8 days later. Obviously, it's a judgement call on your part based solely on the feedback. Sometimes buyers see something they really want and know the paycheck doesn't come for a week. Good luck!

  • I just sold an item for $635 yesterday. The auction ended yesterday at around 11:45am. Not a peep from the buyer. He has about 116 feedback - all positive as well. I'm thinking after a few hrs of not receiving payment that maybe hes just at work and hasn't seen the invoice yet. Then last night I check his account and see that he listed items for sale AFTER he won my auction. Seems he didn't have the funds for the item and is trying to sell other things to get the full amount. Sucks for me because the 2nd lowest bidder just lost by $10.

I think its pretty messed up that he hasn't made contact with me to let me know his intentions. I'm sure he'll pay because hes has 33 positive transactions this month alone! - some items being $200 and up to $450 items. When Ive won something but didn't have the funds to immediately pay after winning, I have always written to the seller that I will be making payment the next day. That has only happened when I know I'm getting paid a day or 2 after the auction ended. I have NEVER kept the seller waiting in the dark. Thats appreciated much more than to hear nothing.

RB1026 - I would keep the item up until your guy makes the payment. Who knows, you could be missing out on other potential offers.

It sucks but if you think he will follow through I would wait the week. Maybe he gets paid every two weeks. If you put it back up for sale it could be a while before you get another bite.

It's been 20 hours since the auction ended. What's wrong with you?

I just had someone with a 4000+ feedback not pay for a $40 item. Two invoices and a NPB claim and still nothing.

If the buyer actually responded to you and requested that you wait, I'd put your odds of getting paid at 75%.

Don't quote me on 2 sentences alone when I clearly wrote 2 paragraphs. I'm saying that hes on there listing other stuff up for sale AFTER winning the auction and it would have been nice as a courtesy for him to have written to me and let me know his intentions since its obvious hes not paying right away. Obviously he bid on something that he cant pay up at the moment and now is selling stuff - and you have the nerve to ask whats wrong with me. Silly clown.

I have to disagree. Maybe last night was his night to list items on ebay and he just didn't get around to paying you. Since it's only been a day, I don't see any problems with it. While I wouldn't do that on a $635 item, I certainly have made the seller wait a few days before just because I didn't get around to it, even though I was on ebay multiple times doing other stuff (making purchases or listing items). Also, like previously mentioned, maybe he is waiting for his paycheck today before he can pay.

Have you thought that it may have just slipped his mind? Since it's been a day, go ahead and send him another invoice and see what happens.

  • Hi Don,

Its highly unlikely that it slipped his mind. That I would have trouble believing - like you mentioned - Its hard to have that slip your mind on a $600+ item. Leaving feedback is something that is most likely to slip someones mind, not paying for something of high value. But, yeah - maybe hes just waiting for pay day. I'm cool with that. I never said I needed the payment immediately after the auction ended. Let me just be clear and say 2 things. 1 - I'm not complaining about why haven't i got paid yet. Just saying that buyers should at least contact the seller if there are any delays in payment. Its simply a courtesy - I'm sure its something everyone on here would appreciate. 2 - I didn't create this thread. I was just explaining a scenario that sucks and happens to frequent on ebay is all.

I disagree. The buyer has a few days to pay and doesn't owe you an explanation for not paying right away. Would it be nice to let you know? Probably. But he doesn't owe you any explanation - even if his intentions are to sell a bunch of other stuff to pay for your item.

whining that you haven't rec'd payment or a note less than 24 hours after an auction's over (whether it's $635 or $6.35) is unreasonable IMO (particularly with a buyer with solid feedback).

  • Usually someone will ask if they can make a said payment on said date, but secure the item with an order. I generally trust people and assume they can make the payment within the time frame. In other cases, there are always a handful of non-buyers each month.

While at least he said he was going to pay next friday, having told you in advance would have been nice. I would have sent a non-payment report. Especially if he is a new member or did not respond after 7 days, or if its an expensive item.

If he responded at all the most likely he will go thru with payment.

maybe he bought more items than he can afford. That happens. maybe a big bill has come up.

maybe someone owes him money he counted on.
