Maybe NGC's changed something after hearing public opinions, but last I heard, only modern coins (Pres dollars, ASEs, First Spouse gold, etc) were the only types of coins being encapsulated in these "Retro holders".......................... image

As the holder of the actual Peace dollar in the NGC original 'Black' slab . . let me say I like mine better.

I thought only modern coins were eligible for the black holders.

I thought the same thing reading the release on their website. I think it was just awkwardly worded though. It also seemed they wouldn't do re-holders with this slab.

I like it. But I like it without an edge-view much better. Unfortunately, edge views are critical.

Without a tight fit around the coin, I don't think the color of the slab will make much of a difference in the real world.

One very important thing to keep in mind, and that can change the aesthetic of this slab dramatically, is that this is an edge-view slab. Therefore, the great majority of the plastic rim around the coin will be open and whatever your background is will be seen. Since this coin has been placed onto a black background, the holder core looks solid and is not too much of a distraction, but once you have this in-hand or placed upon a different background the solid black look will be altered quite a bit.

  • I'm sorry I just don't like any holder where it covers up part of the coin!

Those "prongs" or whatever they are called just kill it completely for me. Do they not have see through prong technology yet?

I just cracked out all my Doilies to submit for the new black slabs. I like 'em.

  • I like the black slabs for just one reason: to best show off my collection of colorized silver coins. The black background looks best, whereas the white looks tacky. (Clear, like PCGS offers, doesn't seem to do much either way.)

(Oh, and for those of you who think colorized coins are tacky: remember, they used to say the same thing about Japanese cars. )

I like air-tites and always go with the black ring.
Undecided about an entire slab in black.
Have to see one in person.
