Fraud Alert (bogus cashiers check)

nencoinnencoin Posts: 1,272 ✭✭✭✭
Someone using the name of James Woodson placed an order via email for $15,500 in bullion and sent a bogus BoA cashiers check. The details are below.

His requested ship to address:

8563 Quail Run Dr
Show Low,
AZ
85901

The check arrived via Express Mail with the following return address:

James Woodson
Fun Jewelry
902 Jimmy D Angelo Way
Myrtle Beach, SC 29572
928-432-7590

Email addresses used:

t0c3nmodz@gmail.com
woodsonj46@gmail.com

This was fairly identical to the dozens of BS bullion inquiries we get from folks who want to pay by credit card. However, since their English was SLIGHTLY better and they wanted to pay by check, we went along with it just to see how far they'd take it. And sure enough, a fake (pretty bad one, too) Bank of America cashiers check showed up today.

Will you take it to the extent of reporting this to the F.B.I. ?

No. We've long since given up on pursuing any of these. I'll continue to alert others about them, of course, but that's all.

It's irresponsible not to report this to law enforcement. Have you tried the postal inspectors?

Might be an idea to let that Fun Jewelry store know , that's a genuine business address for them.

Maybe you should report it to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. You might have a piece of the puzzle that they are missing on a companion case.

    This.
(Although its not my time or my dime so it's easy for me to say).

As an aside, aren't postal transactions videotaped and wouldn't that help finger the fraudster?

The following information was just received from the Numismatic Crime Information Center:

During the past ten days we have received information from dealers receiving requests for gold bullion purchases. This activity had slowed for several months but appears to have started up once again.

The suspects are using different names and addresses. They also want to send cashier's checks and have the gold sent by express mail. One dealer received a bogus cashiers check and is out $15,000.

The following are suspect addresses and names:
    woodsonj46@gmail.com
    johnster392@gmail.com
    mark.manderson128@yahoo.com
    gregcondon15@yahoo.com
    tOc3nmodz@gmail.com

902 Jimmy D'Angelo Way Myrtle Beach, SC 29572
8563 Quail Dr. Show Low, AZ
175/176 Burkholder Dr. Ephrata, PA 17522

The emails received are written with broken English in the body of the text. Suspects are wanting quick responses, payment via cashier's check and purchase sent express mail. Dealer's who have received phone calls have indicated the subjects are of foreign nationality. These are all red flags!!

Dealer's should use extreme caution and screen thoroughly before completing any transaction.
