The quarterly special is actually pretty good for a change!

"Two-Coin Holder Available for Just $10

From October 1 through December 31, 2012 PCGS Collectors Club members can submit an unlimited number of PCGS-graded coins and have them reholdered in our new two-coin holder for only $10 (per holder)."

Now, not everyone wants a 2-coin holder but if you do this is a great deal!

I dont understand why someone would want 2 coins in one holder.
Seems like it would make them harder to store and sell.

What are some good ideas for coin pairs?
I'm thinking possibly my 1846 dime and half-dime
Or the proof and unc Buffalo coins?

Here's one possibility - I'd love to see a "mated pair" error in one of those holders. I've seen them certified as "coin 1" and "coin 2" but having them in a single holder would guarantee they would not get separated.

Just for selling? Probably not a lot. For true collectors who want to see 2 coins at the same time, but still have them slabbed? Maybe quite a few.
I have a neon toned 1957 quarter on the obv, and another on the reverse. Both are slabbed. If I wanted, I could get them together and have a obv/rev where I could see neon at the same time.

The 2011 SAE set of 2 coins comes to mind as well.

Certain other coins (think transition years) would be cool as well.... 1921 Morgan and 1921 Peace.

There is a coolness factor to this as sometimes it isn't all about the money.

Bochiman - Now theres an idea I like, I could do 1886 Morgan BU and a 1986 Proof ASE. To bad I dont own either of these slabbed.
  • BryceMBryceM Posts: 11,851 ✭✭✭✭✭
I can think of a few pairings that would be at least mildly interesting.

    How 'bout:

A $5 Indian and a $2.5 Indian, same year, same grade.
1921 Peace Dollar and 1922 Peace Dollar
    1916 Barber Dime/Quarter, 1916 Barber/Merc Dime
    $20 Lib, $20 Saint
1976 Type I Eisenhower with Type II Eisenhower
    etc., etc.

I can't see myself doing it though. It's a bit of a problem come sale time.

    Yet another BOGUS QS!image
  • NotSureNotSure Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭
Well, I have a pair of early silver commems, varieties, and they are the only 2 graded in the pop reports, so this just may be useful for anyone in a similar situation, which I can't imagine there are too many of. I may be the ONLY one to use this (doubtful, though, with shipping both ways, insurance)..... but as DIMEMAN stated, it is another bogus QS.

I remember when they were actually useful, but .....

Seems the only benefit of a subscription now are the freebie gradings, and access to the pop reports.
    I'll come up with something.

A collector came into the shop today and purchased the 2012 Star Spangled Banner Proof and Unc coins. Interestlingly he said after: "I'm going to use these for that PCGS special ".

My hope is he hits the big-time and gets "70's" and they will have slipped through my hands, yet again.
  • DonWillisDonWillis Posts: 961 ✭✭✭
The two coin holder offers all kinds of possibilities and fun combinations.

    - Obverse & Reverse of the same type

    - Different designs of the same denomination

    - Proofs and Mint States

    - Different metals (ex. Gold $1 and Silver $1)

The combinations are only limited by your imagination. The two coin holder can accommodate any two coins that fit in a standard PCGS holder.

The quarterly special is to reholder two coins from standard holders into the two coin holder. For only $10 - total.

And yes, we are working on a new blue box for the two coin holders.

  • originalisbestoriginalisbest Posts: 5,971 ✭✭✭✭
I think it's an interesting novelty -- as Don mentions, you could display obverse/reverse (per the double coin framed Pan-Pac sets from 1915.) Or derryb's example would be a natural (proof and unc versions of modern commems.) Etc, etc! image

I would think a Large Letter, Small Letter set of FE's would be cool to have in these types of holders. If I were a modern collector another possibility would be Clear and Filled S 79 and 81 Proof Coins, etc. They would make a great reference.

  • I have matched pairs of doubled die peace dollars that share a dramatically double obv but have naked eye different rev dies. The small maint mark is the rare one and rep 90% of the value and I think they would be cool in these holders. I will submit a couple pairs in baltimore in nov
  • RYKRYK Posts: 35,799 ✭✭✭✭✭
Okay, I have thought long and hard about this. I cannot think of two coins in my collection that I would be very sure to keep indefinitely and that belong together. The expense and effort of sending the coins in for the dual reholdering, later deciding to sell one, resending the coin to have the coins holdered into onesies again, etc., and that says nothing about the requisite additional travel to Far Hills, NJ, in addition to the trippin' to Newport Beach, California.

It could be interesting To see 2 of the same coins graded side by side to see how consistent the grading really is

Or better yet put 2 corns in the same holder with the same grade that obviously aren't the same grade

Went through my stuff last night and found several I need to grade. Think an 1876 20c piece in Genunine AU details would look good with an 1880 $10 gold in AU58? Otherwise, I got nuttin.

It would work for my 1893/93 Columbian halves. The only 2 graded, same holder..........nah, it is of no use for 'regular' coins. Unless it's a modern commem, Proof and Unc, MS/PR 70...other than that, I see no use for these. The QS's used to be creative, and worked for everyone involved....for the last couple years now, it's pretty uselss and I haven't used it.

Besides, will your coins make it to Newport Beach from Anaheim? Regardless of how it's shipped, they are all suspect till they arrive and are entered into the system.
    I'll come up with something.

I just don't like the multi-holder concept. Maybe if I knew I'd never sell them, but then I'd still have the storage issue...
  • NotSureNotSure Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭
Storage aside, what happens when/if you decide to sell? Unless the buyer wants both, then, there's another 2 re-holders to be done, and not at $10. . These will end up being used for 2 coins you don't mind 'tying up together', and likely holding on to. The 2 coin 2012 set, yeah one of the few sets I can think of, or the Prez and his Spouse.

Oh, and lets not forget how big a hit the multi-holders were, when the state quarters were put in a 5 coin holder. Boy, those 4,5,6 coin holders set the collecting community on fire, huh? Currently, only 82 listed multi holders, most from ATS...though I do REALLY LIKE this one, but, its a 4 coin holder.

Just found one of the QS's. Two seperate labels, almost like 2 holders melted together.....I see this going over big (no 'sarcasm' emoticon).

edited to add the image from the 'bucket...

I think a I few people will take advantage of the two coin holder
and I can see a few of mine married together until "death" do us part.

However, without the two-coin Holder Blue Boxes, not many are willing
to take the plunge. Once the new boxes are mainstream - more will be
    conjoined.

I keep my certified coins in a Eagle brand album - and until they make
A different plastic page, I'll stick to the single slabs.

Neat idea though... And, Dr. Pete , I'd love to see your
    two 1892-O Halves together.
