Counterfeit 1881-CC

WindycityWindycity Posts: 3,535 ✭✭✭✭✭

Fresh from China, here is their attempt at an 1881-CC Morgan dollar... not bad for the untrained eye but terrible for experienced collectors... the CC and date are particularly interesting... the second 1 is downright funny... note the flared letters in PLURIBUS as well. Picked this up for public speaking engagements to have a Chinese counterfeit to show the audiences.

Is this an eBay auction? Can you give us a link?
    When in doubt, don't.
  • That one screams "fake" to us CC dollar guys, but could certainly fool the untrained eye.

Another sad fact is that it looks circulated which makes it easier to sell at places like flea markets. image

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

(I think) I'm proud to say that I have not only ever bought a coin at a flea market, I have never been to a flea market.
My dog doesn't like fleas, so I figured I wouldn't like anything called as such either. image

The date and MM scream fake. The CC is comical, not really, this is starting to
become very non-humorous, as fakes affect us all. I'm sure the counterfeiters are
starting to become aware of this, just from reading forums such as this one.
How do you think it was circulated? A tumbler?

What does it weigh? I used to find that the counterfeits would be a few grams lighter. Recently I've been seeing more that are much closer to the weight of genuine dollars.

what a totally bogus item, what a shame image
  • The shape of the Minmark CC letters look bogus.

The rest of the coin looks terribly decieving...
