Mint Director Nomination

I saw today where Barack Obama intends to nominate Bibiana Boerio as the new US Mint Director.

Disappointing to say the least as the woman has zero knowledge of coin and medals manufacturing.

UGH.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

The name is LEE!

I have to admit that I was very disapointed when I read the article on Numismaster. She just seems like a left field, political choice.

Why the surprise? It's a political appointment, not one based on numismatic competency.

These are typically political appointments. Ed Moy was on Bush's staff doing personnel work before being appointed Director. She does seem to have a business background in manufacturing. It often varies, but the Director typically is more involved in policy than in operational issues. Good to see there will be someone who is not acting anymore.

Who was the last Mint Director that had any knowledge of coin and medals manufacturing?

    It's largely an administrative position.

After they finish their term as director, they are qualified enough to peddle gold coins.image

The U.S. Mint Director position isn't considered an important cabinet position nor one that requires technical expertise. No director in memory has any prior knowledge of numismatics or numismatic design.

Its all about the staff they bring in. Henrietta Fore had a manufacturing background and some of her personnel choices were not the best. That said, they did clean up the manufacturing facilities under her watch.

One other Mint Director thought. The position is so low on the political totem pole that Ed Moy, a member of Bush's White House staff, was not asked to resign when the current administration took office. In this climate of polarization I find that interesting. Jay Johnson was shuffled off to Treasury in order to qualify for medical retirement benefits after Bush took office and replaced him. Not a slam against that administration as any position in the Plum Book is one that is expected to change when the parties change at the White House. The Mint really is the backwater of government, a sleepy place that has great importance to this audience, but not so much outside our circle.

    My point exactly.

Regardless of her "technical expertise" as US Mint Director, which BTW isn't a Cabinet Position, she'll have the power to really goof up the research area of numismatics by destroying records which could prove invaluable for some future numismatic research project.
