Purchasing raw...

I have been watching some of the posts on buying raw coins lately and got to wondering what percentage of currently slabbed coins within the collection were bought raw. Turns out it is 20 of 56, or about 37% of the collection.

What about you?

I'm not sure, but I would suspect in my collection it's about 10% -- mostly copper and some gold.

Most of the non-copper coins in my collection that are currently raw---and most of these are in a Dansco 7070 album---were purchased in NGC/PCGS slabs and then cracked out. 90% of my early coppers, except for ones with important pedigrees (e.g., Naftzger) or lots of red remaining, are raw----either purchased raw or cracked out of slabs. I have a variety of 19th-century historical medals (all mint state), 95% are still raw. I have only bothered to have about 5 raw coins certified (PCGS)--less than 2% of the number of pieces in my collection.

I am going to say easy 50 of 500. Bought 2 raw yesterday off ebay. Three sent to PCGS last week!

Just to reiterate, the question is what percentage of your slabbed coins were purchased, by you, raw.

So if you have a completely raw collection, the answer would be 0%. image

Roughly 35% of my registry walker set was purchased raw by me and submitted and slabbed (20/20 graded). A few I have since upgraded with coins already slabbed.
~10% of my large cents were raw and submitted/graded. The rest either were already slabbed, or I'm keeping raw for now.

100% of my collection, either inherited or purchased as individual coins 15+ years ago (from hopefully reputable dealers) was raw...until the inevitability of slabbing became apparent.

Now ever year, I select a couple dozen coins and submit them for slabbing.

And so far (knock on wood), I've yet to get any bodybags back...and the grade is usually within a point of the original assumed raw grade. So I guess I've been fortunate.

There is a core of my collection that I bought raw and later had certified because slabs did not exist when I bought the coins. In "the good old days" you bought coins based upon your eye and your experience, not on what it said inside the plastic case. Back there I paid as much as $4,700 for a coin, but you have to remember that prices were lower. My first new car out of college cost me $3,300, and it was a sports car, like a Mustang, not a compact.

My percentage of coins bought raw and then graded has gotten lower because I don't buy very many raw coins these days, although I still buy tokens and medals raw.

My father paid $4700 for his sports car in 1963 - I own it now. I don't think he ever paid more for coins/currency at one time.

It has appreciated about ten fold in 50 years. Wonder which type coins have done worse.

I prefer buying raw coins then sending them to be graded later.

About 70-75% of my collection was purchased raw. Over the past 6 months, I have had it all certified at pcgs.

  • It depends on the series. For bust material, I collect mostly circulated grades. Bought about 40% raw, altho this percentage is getting lower as I become more advanced.

The more modern, the more likely I am to buy in holder. Don't collect much 20th century, but it is nearly 100% holdered.

Overall percentage, about 25% bought raw and holdered by me, 75% bought holdered.

I think 42/121 coins in the primary half dime die marriage/remarriage collection were raw. About 35%

As far as my Early Copper, I initially purchased 90 to 95% of these raw and later had them graded by PCGS. Back in the early 90s to around 2002 or so, it was frowned upon in the EAC community to slab Early Copper. Now, its all the rage! Go figure.

  • In my Registry Set, I have 0.

For my other coins I have about 25%.

I won't lie or sugar coat it, I suck at coin grading. Therefore, I buy mostly slabbed coins if the value is more than double melt. I do have a bunch of raw coins I purchased before I started getting slabbed coins, but those are mostly for the silver content.

    Set Registry

Out of the 17 coins in my set registry, I only bought 3 already holdered by pcgs(1820, 1822, 1825)...80%ish bought raw. All 14 I bought raw graded first try. Many other coins I don't consider in my main collection were purchased raw or in other holders that have since been graded by PCGS. It's all about the coin IMO. My approach might change If I were seeking say 19th century proofs.
