Post an Overdate!

In light of my latest purchase, I'm starting this "Post an Overdate" thread to see what overdate varieties y'all collect!

I figured this would be a fun way to share my newp and see what overdate coins you guys collect, too! image

Any date, denomination, composition, etc is welcome - just as long as it is an overdate!

To start us off... an 1817/3 O.101. image

From what I've gathered, this was hiding in an Indiana-dealer's inventory for at least a decade. He had several other album-toned overdate CBHs w/ sequential PCGS cert numbers, including a 12/1 Sm. 8 and a 20/19 Curl. 2, but this was the only one I was able to snatch up.

When I read the thread title and noticed who started the thread, I kind of had a feeling as to what overdate might be featured.image Here's mine; you might say it has been hiding in the collection of a New England dealer for over a decade-

One of my favorites which was the result of a cherrypick (it's the R6 variety, with a fantastic die crack - I traded up from the R4 variety in XF40 with some cash on top). Apologies for the horrible pictures...

    And a 1910/09 that sits in a 7070.

Here is an example of the very first overdate coin in the U.S. series, the 1796 over 5 half dime. This coin is not as rare as people once thought that was, but there are probably no more than 40 to 50 of them. This is a low grade example but it's easy to tell that it is the overdate.

    The overdate -

    The normal 1796

And on the reserve the berry is under the "E" in "UNITED." On the regular coin it is under the "D."

  • This was originally called a 6/5 by the discover but it is really just a repunched date which makes more sense as the Obv is a new hub type/variance that started production in 1876 making an overdate impossible. Unfortunately this is the closest Trades come to the error type

The only other Capped Bust Dime overdate is the 1830/29.
And there is only one overdate in the Draped Bust Dime series, 1798/7!

Well, I think we just about covered the CBH overdates, thanks to jrocco's thoroughness. Here's the 22/1. Did we miss any?

One of the prettiest coins posted here isn't a real overdate, strictly speaking.

edited to ask: Will someone post their 1817/4 please? image

Close, but no cigar. PCGS called it VF35. image

The obverse is consistent with that grade, but the reverse is definitely 40 if not 45.

This is the NJ Maris 35-J, commonly called the only overdate variety in the NJ copper series. Interesting to note that this is the only NJ overdate die variety and the obverse 35 only comes with the overdate when paired with the J reverse. The Maris 35-W does not show the overdate, and is an earlier die state. Ive questioned over the years if it is actually an 1787/1887 or if it was a die break that resembled an 8 on the first 7 of the date. Anyway, it will always be collected as the overdate so who am I to argue!

BTW, it is a very difficult variety to find in nice condition, with most being in awful condition. XF40 is the finest known for this major Red Book type, and VF20's are near the top of the Condition Census. Almost all known are found with major flaws and these are known both overstruck (on many different pieces including Connecticut coppers and British counterfeits) and as an undertype (as found on three different NJ Maris 34-V's)
