Newp: Classic Head Large Cent

got this from Kelsey and Dave at HLRC while they were set up at the Manchester, NH Coin and Currency Show today. S-279. It was in a slab when I bought it. It is no longer in that slab.

What did the slab grade? 40?
<< <i>Super color for an 1808. >>
Absolutely. Very nice!

Really great color and surfaces. Nice pickup. Looks like the set is coming along nicely.
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
I have few other nice Classic Cents. Recently got two at the ANA in Phila: 1810 and 1812
The slab grade: Good question. How about people can guess if they wish?
I normally look for a touch more detail in the hair, but the surfaces could not be passed up!
If I see an S-286 that is all there, I'll let you know about it, rays!
nice acquisition
i'd say the old holder was vf25 - maybe 20 but i bumped it for surfaces
.
<< <i>VERY nice, Barndog! Is the uneven rim wear an illusion of the photo? If it is, my guess is vf35. >>
Classic Head Large Cents were often struck a touch off center compared to the nicely centered strikes of today
<< <i>I WISH I could find an S-286 1811/10 like that. >>
So do a lot of other collectors.l
I just purchased my 1811 S-287 at the Central FL show this afternoon.
It's a decent Fine (commercial grade) with smooth surfaces, but the color is no where near as pleasing as this '08 you posted.

Not surprisingly, I did not know that.
"It is no longer in that slab."
Even nicer.

<< <i>Very nice, Richard!

I still need to crack it out of it's plastic tomb - an ICG holder, of all things....but hey an uncorroded 1811 for $100,
I don't mind a little extra work
My S-279 is a PCGS VF25 and not nearly as pretty in color. Well, it was a PCGS VF25 but is now in raw.
Lance.
Here's mine for comparison. Also struck a bit off center, but mine's the late die state with the bulge in "States." The pics aren't great, I'll see if I have some better ones. It's really a nicer coin than these images suggest.
I'd wager yours is an F-15, possibly a 20, but I'm really thinking 15 is the best she could get.
The surfaces on this coin are nicer than I usually find on Classic Head Large Cents of just about any circulated grade, so buying this one, even though it had a smidgeon less hair detail than I prefer, was a no-brainer.
<< <i>For those interested, the coin was in an NGC VF-20 holder.

The surfaces are what makes or breaks a large cent for me. And your coin is an absolute beauty! Wow! And the color!
Thanks for sharing it.
I knew it would happen.
