It's cool but I think where they shot themselves in the foot is just offering it for those specific coins. Hopefully not to be outdone, PCGS offers the doily holder for all submissions as an option.

Fortunately they won't be confused with the original black first generation NGC slabs.

These coins were never slabbed in the original black NGC slabs. NGC may be wanting to minimize any confusion between these slabs and the originals.

While they do look somewhat attractive IMO, those new black cores look to have a matte or satiny finish from that NGC pic. The original black holders had more of a glossy appearance. Also, those new black cores lose the whole effect with those prongs IMO.

From the photos, I think the old ones would be more attractive due to the darker and more glossy appearance.
The new cores should work ok when viewed on a dark background.
Sounds like a fun promo to try. I'll probably send in a dozen or so silver Eagles for curiosity purposes.

Personally, I think this is not a very well thought idea which smacks of an attempt to lure submitters.
Sure, the black insert was pretty cool but the bottom line is that its only desireable because there just are not that many coins in the black holders any longer. To Flood the Market with "new" black holders (look at the prongs folks), may provide a vehicle for scammers to squeeze a few hundred bucks more out of unsuspecting bidders.
Hopefully, PCGS will NOT follow suit and as such, hang on to some integrity.

Should have included gold coins. Submitting coins the slabs are limited to is rarely a profitable venture especially since the retro slab is not available for reholder submissions. If previously graded they have to be cracked out and submitted raw. The Sac "cheerio" or "wounded eagle" and maybe the presidential missing edge lettering are worthy of them (If NGC will recognize them on the retro label). Might be good time to submitt if you still have sealed 25th Anniversary ASE sets, provided they will give you the "set" label and the "Early Releases" label if sets qualify. I can see a 70 anniversary set of ASE's in these holders bringing a nice premium.
Can't see much submission demand given the limited coins.

I'm sorry, but that is their problem if they fall for this and pay "a few hundred bucks more" for one of these. NGC has a right to make a holder any color they want. This could just be considered a test run, maybe if it is successful they will make it available for more sizes of gold coins.

Exactly. It's a gimmick.
Detroit has been doing this lately with pony cars and it's laughable. Lance.
For all the naysayers, I think this is a great way to mark their 25th anniversary. They are making a limited production run of their very first slab. This nicely ties together 25 years. What's wrong with that???????
And I think a black-and-white DCAM proof silver eagle will look great in a black slab!
If they say they look so nice (they do), why don't they just cut over to them and not use the white ones anymore? All I see here is a manufactured exonumia "rarity" that's just going to suck more money out of the market as people chase more and more types of plastic limited only the whim of the manufacturer. Late '80s baseball cards, anyone? Is the new Beckett's in?
<< <i>They're cute and will garner a little interest. At least they are pronged to minimize any confusion with the original. >>
The originals are totally different. The originals used the much thicker "no line fatty" slab shells and the front of the slab had the old silver embossed logo (no holograms) with the plain paper label on the back of the slab. And, as you mentioned, there were no prongs.

I imagine the mad eBay rush on these looms ahead. I think the "coin inside" is a mere afterthought. The black fingers and open ring around the coin look bad. Just a silly move sure to cheapen and confuse the grading process. The matte finish is ugly.

Actually, the embossing on the front is white on the original NGC 1.0s, not gold like the 2.1s, etc.

I requested NGC offer black holders again about a year ago. However, I wanted them for the colorized foreign stuff I collect. I still think ASE's, Morgans, etc. look best in PCGS holders.
