Where are all the neat/nice early Bust halves hiding?

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've not seen much for quite some time. I did find this a couple months ago that I like quite a bit. Although it's "cracked up" a little bit.

I just won this auction on ebay. It's a fairly early half dollar (granted a CBH), well used in its day.

Can anyone tell why I'm happy to have acquired this NGC F15 example for just a bit over common money? Seller's photos.

Hahaha, I'd appreciate it! My heart sank after that loss, because I know I let it go too cheap! I mean, really... That's a rare coin, and very deserving of its R5 rating.

At least I can sleep at night knowing it's in your safe possession... But if we ever meet in-person, I may just have to take it off your hands. image

And I suppose it was just meant to be, because if I had won that O.101, I wouldn't have been able to purchase that other O.101 (1817/3, that is) that you see above. image

Oh, and thanks about the avatar! I'm diggin' the Green Bay logo! image

By the way, Zap, I got this from the same seller that you won the O.101 from.

It was in an NGC VF35, and it's an O.107 R3.

Maybe you saw it when the auction was live a couple of months back...? image

This one is no longer hiding in a dealer's inventory ... now this O-111a is hiding in my Overton collection. BTW ... the O-111b is the "Bearded Goddess" variety, so the O-111a, with the start of the famous die crack is more of a "Stubbled Goddess" variety ... actually rarer, but less expensive than the O-111b.

    Astrorat,

That 1807 O.111a is a very interesting die state. To the naked eye, it looks to by the prime state, even rarer. I *think* I can see the beginning of the crack/beard. Does it show up better to the naked eye when you tilt the coin, etc., or do you need to use a glass to really ascertain its existence?

    Very cool. Nice pick up.

    Brian,

I keep going back to that 1817/3. Wow. I hope it just sings for you when you get it under the lights. I finally got mine at the ANA in Chicago last summer. F12 raw from an old BHNC member who was selling off. I got a good deal on it and it has just a bit of colored toning. No image yet. The prices on the 17/3 are through the roof. I didn't think I'd be able to get one that wasn't just scrubbed for the kind of $$ I can afford. My bid for that 1809 101 was at about my limit. My kids need to go to college...

Where are you at with your CBH collection? Are you a BHNC nut yet? Working toward it?

Thanks! My expectations are high for that 1817/3. I've got a feeling it's gonna look killer in-hand. It should arrive at my P.O. by Friday/Saturday at the latest. I was hoping to have it by Friday morning to bring to the Long Beach show to see what Todd from BluCCPhotos could do as far as imaging goes (I've never worked with him, but I hear he's a swell guy and I've seen what he can do with toners - WOW!), but I might just have to wait until the next local show, which I believe is Ontario.

And yes, I'm working towards being a eligible for a BHNC membership. That's my dream, and even though my set is growing by leaps and bounds quicker than I ever could've imagined, I'm only up to about 20 marriages... if that. All are F-XF, and that's what I'd like to stick with, no matter how long it takes. I'd like to focus on quality rather than quantity.

As much as I wish it was the prime die state, it is an O-111a. There is the slightest "nub" from the neck and a very light crack from rim to star 1 through star 5.

Yep ... it was a DK piece that I watched for quite a while. Purchasing it closed out my DMs for 1807 ... yea!

Sounds like you have the fever, Brian. It took me about 10 years to educate myself and slowly build my collection up to the 100 die marriages. I just got into the Bust Half Nut Club last summer.

It's a great set to explore. My average grade is about VF25 so we're about in the same ballpark. About 65% or so of my collection is from ebay purchases - it was a great way to look at a LOT of coins, AND to find a few fun ones hiding in the weeds. They're still out there (like the pictured 1809 O.101) but it's getting harder to find them. More people are getting into the series. Over my time searching, I was able to find an R.6, an R.5+ and a few R.5s, though. The hunt is fun! Good luck with your pursuit. You'll find a lot of very knowledgeable bust specialists on this forum. A few have already checked in on this thread.

And here's my splendid 108a. Purchased from DK a few months back.

It's definitely an eye-catching variety w/ plenty of heavy clashing and that bold E/A.

One of problems might be that the prices have dropped and those with "strong hands" don't want to take a hit. I was drawn this piece, which is an EF-45, some years ago, but I don't think I could get my money out of it today.

    Bill,

I like your 95, and it might bring what you paid. But i can assure you that most of the serious early and CBH collectors
are holding their pieces very close to the vest, and not letting them go. Not because of any pricing decreases, but for the reason
there are not any nice coins coming out--scarce to rare that a high end for grade piece becomes available.

In the last 2 years, I have found only one coin to add to my sets, and paid way over guides for it. And the few dupes I let go went
very high. The only place I have seen any desireable examples have been in 2 Sheridan Downey sales.

The half collectors love their coins, and I cannot see any of them selling.

  • I don't own most coins for too long; I figure maximum enjoyment comes from as many people seeing coins at auction and having an opportunity to own is the best recipe for the greater good.
  • I too have been having a hard time finding new bust coinage. I have not purchased one in well over a year, so to stay in the game I did cross a few to PCGS. They are in new holders so they feel like new purchases.
