Report of phony silver eagles

CaptHenwayCaptHenway Posts: 32,115 ✭✭✭✭✭
Posted today on my old coin dealer network by a long-time dealer from upstate NY:

"for your information
there was an individual going around locally selling
phony silver eagles. would fool most dealers.
weight was right on. color and appearance looked good
only when you clinked a few of them together did they
not "sound" right.
we confirmed them as fakes with our xray gun.
if they offered them in a roll, with a few good rolls, most
dlrs would have bought em.
...carefull, they're getting better and better all the time !"

I always dreamed of having x-ray glasses.

Few years ago they were available on many magazines, together with the sea monkeys! image

Joking aside, how a x-ray gun works to spot a fake silver Eagle?

Any idea what they were made of?

So much for taking the word of the dealer. When I buy these from my trusted guys, I typically wont even open the tube. You can bet I will be now.

They bombard the item in question (metal, powder, etc) using low kV radiation from the "gun" so the item can release flouresence photons back to the detector (gun) to determine what element(s) it is.

Almost like an xray machine and gieger counter in one unit.

IMO, whoever operates these "guns" needs to wear proper radiation dose monitoring devices (like the little badge you see Xray Technologists wear at hospitals/imaging clinics or the ones nuclear reactor workers wear).

Maybe a better idea is to use one of those disintegrator ray guns like Marty the Martian

No radiation from the device linked. Completely safe for the user.

Does this X-ray gun work on base metal coins that are silver or gold plated?

If it was in Rochester, it will be moving east quickly... Albany, Boston, Hartford look out. Cheers, RickO

I have one coin that I definitely need an answer to..........will be checking local salvaging companies if they have such a device. And does it work through plastic, the slab it's in?

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!
