Super rare Lincoln cent variety sells on eBay - 1970-S DDO

The coin is graded by ANACS "AU 58 details, Tooled" for some reverse damage. It sat with no bids at a $1500 open for most of the week, before a flurry of late activity pushed it to $1781.

For those who are not familiar with the variety, it is considered the rarest in the Memorial series, and second only to the 1958 DDO overall. What is interesting is that it typically sells for fractions of its more famous cousin, the 1969-S DDO, despite being much harder to find. This may be because it is lesser known, or because the doubling (while strong) is not nearly as dramatic as the 1969-S.

Congrats to the new owner, whoever he is. If there are any Registry set hawks reading, I'd be very curious to hear if it shows up in a Genuine holder there in the near future.

Looks to me like a fair price to both buyer and seller. Congratulations to both!

Cool coin, I used to own a MS-64, but sold it a few years ago.

  • I was watching that one to see what it would go for. I currently own a MS62 RB myself.

hate to say this guys BUT I can't even see the double die. I think its getting ridiculous when you need a microscope to see something. I would rather have the 55DDO

  • Doubling is much more evident in better grades.
  • The "L" in Liberty is definitely doubled. Can't see anything else. Must be getting old.

I cannot begin to imagine how you felt when the 1992-D Close AM sold at Heritage for 20 grand!

As a side note, lot's of folks cannot recognize a good doubled die and as such cannot appreciate their rarities. Do you suppose Breen used a microscope? Which BTW, isn't used to find these but is used to clearly show the doubling to those who cannot see it.

I still remember missing a pick on one of those on eBay years ago... a stellar variety for sure.

While a nice variety, I would not classify it as "super rare". PCGS pops show 12 in BN, 14 in RB, and 21 in RD. That's more than enough to satisfy the demand in the registry sets. IMO, the ebay purchaser buried himself with a problem coin. The 1927 or 1935 DDO are a much rarer coin when comparing populations. Mel

  • From what I hear, many of those numbers are possibly from people re-submitting coins hoping for better grades.

Let's don't forget about ANACS and NGC attributing these coins as well.

If you can't see the doubling on this coin, which is clearly evident to the naked eye on all lettering, I'd try to find my way to the eye doctor in the near future. The'55 is far and away the most obvious ddo in us coinage, but there are other significant Lincoln varieties, too. Why not open your mind and look a little closer...

As far as the pops on these. As with any coin, pop reports do not take into consideration resubmissions. This one is no exception. I have heard from a good source that one gentleman alone has submitted his 64 perhaps a dozen times looking for an upgrade. The proof of its scarcity would seem to be represented in its lack of auction appearances throughout the year. 69-s seems to be available if you have the scratch
