8/24/12 Precious Metals Porn Thread

What did you all pick up this past week?

I bought 57 total oz of Silver and $45 face of 90% that I didn't have long enough to take a picture of...if you know what I mean.

But I had to keep these four 1 oz silver art bars! Pretty cool to have the complete set of these and be in pristine condition too. I overpaid for them ($40/oz) but with my profits from the other stuff I flipped, it's like I bought them for free the way I see it. image

LOVE that PT piece, jmski52. That series is the only artistically appealing series we've released in the last 20 years.

After a pretty long drought, I added a few BU morgans to the mix this week. Since that's kind of a dull shot, I threw in a few odds and ends off my desk...

Weiss, did you see the 1 oz. rhodium bars that Kitco has for sale now? I'm not going to bite, but I thought you might like to know about them.

Huh. No I hadn't seen those. Is there an image of them? I see them listed under their rhodium products as Baird & Co bars. But I don't see what they look like.

Man, love those sheets SB! I'd buy those at $100/per too.

Something I haven't done in a long time, generics. 2 of those Red Lobsters and then that mardi gras one.
And something I've never went and bought, 64 JFKs. Found a couple laying around, so have to finish a roll...damn OCD.

Chumley, that's a beautiful display! Love it!

I bought some cheap sample slabs to use as giveaway and some fractional bars. The Scottsdale are kind of cool.

Picked up these pristine Drovers Country bars today, 3 of 5 are consecutive serial numbers and the other 2 are close.
I've only seen these with the Bull on the left of the bar and they are from 1973, on these the Bull is in the middle (no jokes please lol). Can anyone tell me why these are different and are they any more "uncommon"? tia

Those 5 Switzerland Drovers Country bars are the 1974 version and those are rarer and harder-to-find than the 1973 version. Those are excellent finds IMO. The 5 1974 Switzerland Drovers Country bars that you bought are the much better finds than the 4-bar 1973 Justice Mint "Price and Wage Controls" set that you posted in your OP in my opinion. The 1974 Drovers Country bars will fetch more of a collector's premium on ebay than the 1973 versions will based on past auctions that I have seen but that was a long time ago and I have not seen one sell on ebay for a long while. I do not know how much they will currently go for on ebay but I know that they will fetch a greater premium than the 1973 version would.

EDIT: I looked on ebay and I see some that are currently priced between $79.99 and $99.95 (BIN price) but I have not found any that have sold at that those prices. So far, I have not found any past completed ebay auction sale prices on any 1974 Drover Country silver art bars. Keep in mind that, generally speaking, silver art bar ebay BINs are priced higher than a regular winning bid on the same bar and may not move at the given BIN price.

Thanks for the help 1970SilverArt. I too saw those 1973 ones on eBay and was kind of shocked that they sold for only a very slight negligible premium.
Maybe I'll try the 2 non consecutive ones individually and see what they fetch. I'll be keeping the 3 consecutive ones no matter what. Thanks again for your help, it's always appreciated.

You are welcome. image Yeah that is a good idea to sell the 2 non consecutive ones individually and see what winning bid that they can get. My collector instinct tells me that you will do fine with selling those bars on ebay in terms of the gross bid that you will get for them.

Apparently my collector instinct was wrong on what kind of premium the the 1974 Drovers Country silver art bar would fetch on ebay. I saw two 1974 Drovers Country bars get a winning bid of only $36 each. I would have expected a larger premium on ebay for that particular bar (at least $50 for each one) since it is a rarer bar then the 1973 one. I guess that there is not much of a demand for that bar.

like anything 1970 SA, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. There can be "guidelines" of what something is worth, but 4 oz Engelhards going for $3000+ proved to me that it's worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
As always, thanks for your help bud, I always appreciate it.

Also when it comes to silver art bar premiums on ebay, the following statement could also apply.........

"Past performance is not always an indication of future performance"

In the end, the supply and demand of the ebay marketplace will ultimately determine the current worth of a silver art bar (or anything else) on a particular day. FWIW in the past, I have seen a few silver art bars that used to fetch big premiums a while back now fetch about only $5-$10 over spot and vice versa on ebay.
