Found a tough Franklin Half last week - 1956 Type I UPDATE: Grade & TrueView Added

After hunting for proof cameos for nearly two years, I finally found one of these last week.

I've found several 1956 Type I half dollars, but never one with the two-sided frost this one has, I believe it'd be a 64 Cameo.




UPDATE 10/15 - The grade on this one posted tonight, I'm very pleased to have it coming back in a PR66 CAM holder.

Cameo type 1's are truly tough to find. I've found a number of brilliant examples - never a cameo. In my experience, the cameos that are found have stronger frost on the reverse than on the obverse.

Good luck with that one, it looks to be on the borderline to me. Nice find though...

Nice looking coin. I don't think it will cameo, but given that you bought it raw it should not be a big deal. My Type 1 has a brilliant obverse and a DCAM reverse... after all, it's the reverse that makes it a Type 1. Congrats on your pickup!

Be to honest guys, it could get cameo or even dcam.....why do I say that? I've seen PCGS CAM and DCAM that didn't deserve it or were inconsistent. For example a dcam that looked like a cam when compared to other cams, then a cam that looked dcam when compared to other dcams OR a non cameo that should be a cameo.

I appreciate the input. I'm actually pretty confident that it'd CAM. I probably won't have another submission going in for another month or so, but am anxious to see what PCGS's opinion is on it too.

I think the contrast stands out a little clearer in smaller photos.

PCGS seems to be a little more lenient with the Ty1s.

But even w/o that leniency, I feel pretty sure it will CAM.

What do you feel will hold it to a 64? Are there hairlines??

There are some obverse hairlines that I think will limit the grade.

I think the lower grade may also make them more likely to give it a CAM...don't think that should play into their grade, but frequently feel that it does...they are tougher on the real tough ones in high grade.

It may be just a 64,but that Cameo frost is superb!

Very nice example of a hard to find coin. A Type 1 1956 proof half with two sided frost is very hard to find.

From your photographs it appears that the frost is not heavy enough to warrant a CAM designation.

Regardless of whether or not it receives a CAM designation, it is a very nice coin to add to your collection. I have a couple of Type 1 half dollars, all brilliant except for one that has heavy reverse frost and a brilliant obverse.

i think the weakness of the mirrors and also the uneven frost will be a nice non-Cameo.
