Would you send a payment via PayPal GIFT...?

..with someone you have never dealt with before? Is there any recourse should the transaction sour?

No. never. Just tell the seller to send you a paypal invoice and have him eat the fees. if it's an expensive item, I typically say I'll give you 1-2% extra to "help" with the fees.

To my knowledge, there is no recourse if things go sour with the gift like there is when a " sale transaction" takes place.

I'd say from someone on the board you could ask for a couple of references----e.g. another board member who can vouch for them and their integrity. Something like this

"Hey, I'm interested in your card but since I've never dealt with you before would you be willing to give me a couple of names of people who have bought from you in the recent past so I can verify your ----- reputation, sincerity, etc."

If someone isn't willing to do that I'd definitely not do PP gift.
  • I have done this a few times and I have never had a problem before. And one of those times was an item well over $6000.
  • I might send PP gift to someone I have never dealt with before if we were talking about a small amount of money, maybe $30-$40 or less. Otherwise, no.

If it's someone I trust, I have no problem using the gift option.

I did a 3K gift transaction on the US Coin BST without a hitch to a respected member who owned his own store and it went smooth as silk, that didn't mean I still didn't worry my butt off until it was in hand. Since then I have stayed away from the gift option, I would rather pay a little extra for the added protection and not stressing over what ifs.

Serious question: Isn't using PayPal gift for the purchase of goods as unethical as, say, safety bidding?

Nope. As far as Paypal is concerned, you sent the other guy a "gift."

I have sent payment gift for payment owed all the time. I paid Mike Navarro that way for the Fantasy Football pool. Why should paypal get a cut off EVERY single transaction that takes place? No sell of goods took place between Mike and myself....

Technically I am guessing it would be 'Payment Owed'?? The sell didn't take place on ebay. It happend between two card collectors emailing back and forth and using PayPal as the monetary liason.

Doesn't paypal deserve compensation for letting you use them as the liason? They aren't in businees out of the kindness of their heart.

You can send $$ to anyone, anytime, instantly throughout the world. This costs $ to make happen, and since you are using the service, you should supply the $ to make it happen.

I'm not calling you out Bobby, just the world in general. STOP LOOKING FOR SOMETHING FOR NOTHING ALL OF YOU.

    rant over, sorry,
  • A lot of people use paypal gift, not just Bobby. However, to answer the question, I would not use gift for someone that I didn't know unless the amount was small (e.g. ~$20-30).

PayPal has a "free" account. You may sign up for it, however, guaranteed one of your first payments will be held up, therefore forcing you to "upgrade" to a premier account which isn't free. Is that ethical? I don't think so.....does anyone see where I am going with this?

PS - I paid PayPal roughly $4,000 last year. Does that not entitled me the priviledge of paying for an item, an unforced transaction (not thru Ebay) using PayPal as the provider? That was their main goal anyway I thought.....they wanted to be the #1 monetary transaction provider in the world, easily overtaking Western Union........

Sure, but then you incur the risks associated with the transaction.

Don't expect them to help you if you get ripped off.

Think of it this way, you're sending him a gift and he is sending you one......maybe.

    Good for you.

I've used gift many times. both as a buyer and a seller, with no issues. I would be hesitant if the amount were significant and I
didn't know or trust the other party.

No ethical issues here. Paypal gift with trusted members Hopefully ( i have had enough of you out here) to say I am trustworthy.

I agree. Paypal does not deserve a cut of us on the CU board. I would agree for anything over $150.

This board is self policing. With the exceptions of the SH**s and Alts(by the way I don't know what that is) except an undesirable.

I have never had a problem with a transaction on this board. Knock wood.

I myself would like to encourage more trading. I had two great trades this week card for card with no problems.

As for selling on the board I have had great luck and enjoyed my transaction.

Can't we all get along. As for ethics. The government is getting over 50% of what I make now, so ethically I am entitled yes. If paypal didn't want us to use gift it would not be there. Therefore, use it on small transaction.

Can't we all just get along and have some fun. Trade someone. See my trading post on the B/S/T

My two cents for what it is worth. Probably two cents.

  • Ive done plenty of PP gift transactions with board members both buying and Selling.
