Is this coin artificially frosted??

I saw this Franklin at TeleTrade and thought it had the "look" of the Artificially Toned coins I've seen posted here, probably turning in the holder and showing the telltale signs.

    That's sick.
I would bet PCGS wants that one off the market.

It is certainly not an orginal look. I'd say the coin needs to TLC out of the holder or it's a goner for sure. It's one of the risks of buying new slabs. You can't always be sure that a coin has not had something done to it. It has certainly happened to me with coins that were dipped and then turned.

    Al,
You are right on target with this one. PCGS (and I) were duped by a number of artifically frosted coins a decade ago. They looked great.... for a while.

I don't have pics of all the cameos that PCGS bought back, but here is one that was in a dcam holder - only to turn to garbage aftrer a year or so in the vault.

    Sure looks similar to me.

Also, there were a set of cert numbers to be wary of. This quarter was cert number 21037572. Other suspect cert numbers start with 21167xxx and 40002xxx. All about 2002 or so. Other coins that were AF included a 1938 cent, 1954 dcam nickel, and 1954 half.

Hopefully this will help people recognize AF coins in the holder. If you own one of these, PCGS will stand behind them. One of the main reasons why PCGS is my #1 TPG's.

It's one of the risks of buying new slabs.

if i understand condor101's analysis correctly, the slab is a PCGS 8 which means it's at least 10 years old. also, looking at some other coins via the search feature they tend to be in the same generation slab, some even with the same few numbers in the cert. no. being the same. probable that they were done by the same individual around the same time.

for those interested, search on "Artificially Frosted" and tell me if you think it might be AF.
