Nope! You don't need to own anything outside of an active and curious mind to be an enthusiast and someone who is driven within this hobby. A seeker of knowledge and history with a passion* for coins would be plenty.
Visiting museums and fellow collectors who do own coins would be fine. The need to own is inherent in each of us but for definition purposes, you're a Numismatist with or without even a single coin if the above criteria is met.
*And to keep my post on topic, that's my single defining word: Passion. >>
I agree with you on "numismatist" but that's slightly different than "coin collector."
We always preach, "buy the book before the coin". If a collector, in his infancy is reading and studying along with attending various shows and lectures why must he (immediately) own a coin before being a coin collector?
I am also aware of those who own coins by the boat load who I would refer to as a hoarder and/or accumulator rather than a collector.
Simply owning a coin doesn't make one a coin collector anymore than owning a baseball glove makes one a baseball player.

Is there an underlying need to be called a "coin collector" without a coin or collection? I would have thought numismatist would be even better!
That being said, I'm guessing most people buying a book or attending a show have access to coins (say in their pocket) so it's not a far stretch to pull one out and look at it
Even the homeless have coins so you don't need much to be a coin collector, but there are places where it can be harder, say in jail or in certain parts of the world.
One coin does not constitute a collection, so it must be more than one coin. Some people can be deluded into thinking they are coin collectors that don't own a collection, that's wrong. They may have the mentality, the proclivity, the education etc. but if they do not have the coins, they are not coin collectors. One can be a numismatist without owning coins, not a coin collector. Sorry to a certain once-collector-of-early-colonial coins. You're still a great numismatist.

that's my take on it, too.
that's why my answer was "group" in a single word and the answer stated in the long form: "group of metal disks which served or may serve as money in commerce, selected, obtained and saved with intent to form a collection with some logical organization to it and for the purpose of enjoyment of ownership and growth of the group in number and/or quality."
Yes, this definition excludes collectors of (exclusively) exumonia, and former coin collectors, and "numismatists" who have no coins, as well as certain hoarders. It does include collectors of NCLT
edit: another good answer, in a single word, would be "collection"

So the moment someone for whatever reason sells his collection he no longer part of the brotherhood? He is no longer a coin collector?
Interesting. . .
PS: What do you call a person who inherits a coin collection yet has zero interest in it? Still a 'coin collector'?

Why?
Why does a coin collector need to own a coin?

Actually owning a coin does make you a collector and you have to play baseball to be a baseball player, the amount of games you play has no barring.
