What has happened to the bidding on Ebay?

Is it just me, or are the bids just not there? I am consistently selling the same items and grades that I see others sell, yet I am consistently getting $50-$100 less for my items than others get for theirs? What is the big secret?

Bobby, all the heavy hitters are off at fat camp through August 5. You should set your auctions to end on Sunday, August 12. By then they'll be *hungry* and ready to bid on your stuff.

I don't know what the deal is with eBay bids, but I agree with Bobby that the bids are way off. I'm scared to list anything without doing it BIN, BIN/BO, or setting a minimum bid showing the least I would take for the item.

Well....the stock market has been on a cold streak as of late. I do hear all the predictors say that the economy is going to tank, your 401k's will be sliced in half, etc.....And I think the upcoming election will play a big part in things to come....

No....I was saying that I didn't list cards due to the National going on.....but CGC comics, they should be immune to the National......

Bobby, wouldn't this question have been better asked in a comic book forum?

As for the economy it's been in the crapper for at least 5 years now.

    Good for you.

Nah....I like cards better.....besides, there are alot of similiraties between graded cards and graded comics.

Right, and I'm saying that the comic book geeks are at fat camp until Aug 5 and you should hold off on all auctions until then.

You didn't know that most fat camps across the US continue until Aug 5?

You need to forget national and think about the Fat Camps. There's your problem.

Thanks for the advice! Appreciate the comments - that is SellerSourcebook, that I joined to get the template. I like that one for comic books. I am thinking like someone else said - maybe the summer months are just a really bad time. And the economy is in a funk. This is going to be a weird election year. I am not too impressed with either candidate - however WE CAN'T keep going in the same direction we are going.

This is also why scratch and sniff comics in high grade are so rare.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Summer auctions can really stink even for Baseball. Stick with BIN'S or a higher stating bid till fall.

Not that this is a big name card by no means, but seeing something like this just makes me laugh. Over $10 higher for a half grade lower. Go figure.....

    Competitor $16 = PSA 4

    My card $2.80 = PSA 4.5

    Just foolish......

  • Ebay does seem to slow down in the summer, I have been doing decent on my sales. I am setting an opening price that I am ok to sell at, if it fails to sale I just move it to a BIN, have patience and my sales have been OK (not great but not bad either). Every once in a while I throw an item out an open .99 auction just to get more views at my cards and to move old inventory.

    Good luck Bobby!

I agree that things are not moving well. I would list 10-20 cards and all but 2-3 would sell, now I am listing 10-20 cards and only 2-3 are selling.

    Tough times for the sellers!

I don't know about comic books, but for cards, I think that people are saving up for National. I thought that when ebay put cards on the front page after the Black Swamp find, bids did spike for a bit.

I have not noticed a difference between the "page quality" differentation, although I think there is an unwritten rule that it is SUPPOSED to matter.

The economy is on hold until after the November Elections. Trust me on this, I have been in retail for 30 years, and every Presidential Election year without fail, the economy stalls from JULY-NOVEMBER.

like anything else, each collector has their own feelings on the subject of Page Quality.

for me, anything modern (newer then 1970) has to have white pages. but that is just my preference.

Many buyers do not use a search feature and just buy something they see and want rather than seeing if they can get it cheaper somewhere else.

Bobby, I would say the difference is, just as with cards, not all CGC 8.5's are the same, just as some PSA 7's look a heckofalot closer to 8's, and some closer to 6's. The immediate differences I see between your 8.5 example links is your copy had a large coverwrap reaching onto the back cover, while the other copy was better centered. Yours also had a noticeable pen arrival date, which is a negative for some.

As well, the National does indeed not affect the CGC comic market, but as far as comic conventions go, the San Diego ComicCon just wrapped in July, and the Chicago ComicCon is coming August 9-12. So that may well have affected your potential bids... hope this helps! image

Oh and Bobby, you are absolutely correct, page quality does matter, but it's sometimes not so noticeable on some books. For a typical comic buyer, offwhite vs white in a common '60s book may be a wash, but for a given book, if a white pages vs. "cream to tan" is offered, there will be a noticeable difference in any auction result.

The lower the page quality goes, the less desirable the book becomes. Worst of all possible worlds for a comic is to have brittle/low quality pages, as no matter how rare it is otherwise, you can't touch it without causing bits and pieces to crumble away.

Here is my Amazing Spiderman #25 CGC 8.0. The bidding was sparse and I consider myself lucky to have gotten this price, even though it was a pretty low final bid...

    Amazing Spiderman #25 CGC 8.0 - $237.50

Meanwhile, this is someones else comic, same grade and everything, but he is offering free shipping. He has already obtained my final selling price with four whole days to go!! Does free shipping REALLY matter that much, or is their some shill bidding on?

    Bobby,

There is a pay site called GPA for comics much like VCP for cards. It tracks years of auctions for CGC graded books.
Data for ASM 25 in 8.0 for 2011-12:

    Jul-24-2012 $238 Cert# 1012241005
    Jun-17-2012 $239 Cert# 0625067003
    May-31-2012 $315 Cert# 0936191006
    May-06-2012 $261 Cert# 1012241005
    Apr-26-2012 $440 Cert# 0710967003
    Apr-16-2012 $400 Cert# 0169085003
    Oct-02-2011 $338 Cert# 0179154012
    Apr-29-2011 $318 Cert# 0985186004
    Mar-05-2011 $275 Cert# 0175589003

Pretty all over the place. I think the 400 and 440 sales may have been movie hype. Looks like you just got unlucky that one sold for the lowest price the week before you sold yours. Could be that its summer or that it was right after Comic Con where a lot of money was spent.

    for your XMEN 12 8.5 from 2011 and 2012

    Jul-24-2012 $455 Cert# 0906344012
    Jun-10-2012 $388 Cert# 0906344012
    May-03-2012 $630 Cert# 1017997003

    Dec-21-2011 $455 Cert# 0951289012
    Dec-12-2011 $375 Cert# 0180465002
    Dec-02-2011 $500
    Oct-08-2011 $435 Cert# 0967249001

    Feb-03-2011 $525 Cert# 0939569013

HUGE range on that book. but you sort of fell in the middle The 630 was too high apparently

Any other books you are selling LMK and i can send you the data. I subscribed recently as I was working on a collection so Ill be most likely canceling it next month.

One other thing...your Xmen has a miswrapped cover as you can see on the back. They dont hit it at CGC for it but collectors dont like that. The conversations on the CGC board about miswraps are much like the "how can that centering get a PSA9" over here

Wow! I did not know they had a 'VCP' for comics!! What is the website, and how much is it per month?
  • Bobby,

Free shipping on CGC listings is HUGE, as it usually costs $12 to ship a CGC Properly. Most people have no idea how BIG those slabs are! lol

Also, the listing you linked for the current ASM that's still going.... that seller there is the CGC equivalent to Rick here, as their buying fanbase is large and loyal

Its $11/month and a must have if you are going to deal in books.

I think more comics get sold at the weekly online auctions and comiclink than thier baseball card counterparts also.
