Larry J. Greenstone (seaeagle coins): 1954-2012

Although I have been sure for some time, I now have full confirmation to report the passing of our friend and fellow dealer Larry J. Greenstone. Larry passed away on April 5, 2012. Based on the amount of weight loss he had the last time several of us saw him in early March, I think I can say with a great deal of accuracy that he passed away from a known illmess - hence his reason for getting out of the coin business.
Larry was a staple at the Parsippany, NJ show for several years. Despite not being one of the larger dealers at the show, Larry's professional approach and understanding of having what people wanted drew many customers to his table for much of the day. If it was Buffaloes, Barbers, or early Walkers you wanted, Larry usually had them at a solid value consistent with the market. He was also more than willing to put his money where his mouth was to buy these coins as well. He had dealings with many of you on the BST, which I am sure they were solid and without incident.
----------------------
I spoke to Larry several times a week, with me of course picking up the phone most of the time since I have this OCD thing with talking to people on the phone! It was a shame that Larry was not able to enjoy more of his life after taking care of a variety of personal matters.
To put it best, he was a really, really cool guy. At least now we call have some closure that he is deceased. I hope that there is a moment of silence for him at the next Parsippany, NJ show.
Respectfully submitted,
Greg Heim

RIP, Larry.

I spent a considerable amount of time with Larry all throughout the March Baltimore show. I never thought that he might be exiting the business as he was ill nor did I notice any major weight loss. He just mentioned that he needed a break from the coin show circuit as he was working a full time job and the primary caretaker of his mother who is in ailing health and would rather try to squeeze in a few golf outings.
This really comes as a major shock to me!
RIP, my friend.

sent him a 2 1/2 gold that was a fake and he thought it was good but PCGS said no! Of course
we worked that out just fine.
One of my sales was a very nice 1893cc that I had just gotten back from PCGS, AU53 if I recall, and
put it up on the BST and 3 minutes later sold it to Larry. But, then the problem arose, he wanted
me to throw in a Vegas showgirl to go with it! He did get the coin just not the girl. I think I had
already promised the girl to Roger (MustangGT) anyway.
Great sense of humor and wonderful and easy to deal with. A pleasure and I'm sad to hear he's
gone. My condolences to all on the forum that knew him or dealt with him and to his family as well.

The hobby is worse off for having lost him.

If member rld14 was also working behind the Seaeaglecoins table at a show between the two of them I'd always have tears from laughter.

Thanks for posting that pic... It's a pic I took of Larry at Parsippany, we took it for Bear IIRC.
Larry was a close friend of mine, outside of coins.. I can remember numerous times where we'd hang out, look at coins for an hour and spend hours just shooting the, eh I don't wanna get banned too but you know the word. We had some pretty intense conversations, really deep stuff and it was amazing to get to know him.
For those of you who really got to know Larry, it was an honor and a treat to know the man. He was one of a small handful of coin dealers that I trusted implicity, but he was also a good friend and damn I am very upset to hear this
I hadn't heard from him in a few months, I suspected something was up, but I figured that he was just burned out on the whole coin dealer thing, there were a number of people that he just got tired of dealing with and I think he felt it wasn't worth the aggravation anymore. I am going to guess that he knew he was sick and was settling his affairs.
We had talked... and he had indicated that he was going to go on a road trip or see old friends.. maybe just go out and wander around the country.... Knowing Larry, I figured that's what he was doing... I wish I had known he was really ill, this kills me.
I was hanging out with Ankur on Saturday.. went to see that new Dark Knight movie and once again he asked if I had heard from Larry. I hadn't. Now I know why. Well Ankur just called me and told me the news, and I just got an email from Mr. Broadstruck as well.
This just SUCKS. But as much as it's horrible to lose Larry I am honored to have gotten to know him and call him my friend. I know people wax poetic after someone dies, but the truth is, Larry was someone very special and the world is far worse without him in it.
Godspeed Larry, I'll miss you terribly. Love ya man!

Many positive interactions with Larry here with Barbers... a pleasure to message with and appreciated his honesty, integrity and good eye for originality. His posts were always from the heart-- sorry I never got to meet him in person.
Thank you for posting the photo and those who knew him well, for the eulogies, much appreciated.
Prayers for his family...

When i spoke to him about setting up my first time at the parsippany show we ended up being on the phone for over 40 minutes going through different inns and outs of the coin business.
He was a true friend to all.
One amazing thing about him was how he cared for his mother with everything he had. I remember him coming into a show almost in tears because he had to place his mom in a home and was no longer able to care for her.
He always was giving and didnt want to take.
So much so that it seems that none of us truely knew what he was going through. He didnt want us to know.
I think the saddest part is that it took us 3 months to find out about his passing.

Yes. SeaEagleCoins = Larry Greenstone
I was puzzled when I heard he was no longer setting up at shows and now I am just saddened. I know Rld14 was close to Larry and am glad he provided such a nice post and the great photo. Godspeed to a good man.

Larry, you will be missed......May your soul rest in peace.
Although we had only a few minor business dealings prior to our meeting, I got the
feeling that we had known each other far longer than just the casual business
relationship. I knew him thru all of his friends - and all who knew him - called him friend.
I spent well over an hour chatting with him prior to my leaving for the airport to catch my
flight home - and we had a few laughs - discussed the market - chatted about mutual interests -
called RLD14 [ woke his lazy a$$ up - and we both enjoyed our conversation with Bill. ]
From what I hear, Larry passed shortly after Baltimore - and to all who knew him - my deepest condolences.
