Hi all, how do most of you feel about rim nicks on coins? I understand that for some coins their is no choice due to price wise and rarity but what do you think of these two coins? Do the rim nicks detract from the look of the coin and the overall resellability??? Still like the coins or ?

Rim nicks rarely bother me...they have to be pretty major for me to even consider them.

I don't think they detract from your coins.

    Any defect will affect resellability.

For those that collect trade dollars, does the rim nicks affect your opinion in buying these two coins if they were offered or would you still think these two coins are nice choice coins.

Also do you think CAC would sticker these two coins??

I was able to view in-hand the 1873 PCGS EF40 in the thread. Heck, that is even my image of the coin used for discussion. The coin has a trivial mark at 10:00 on the obverse, but it is nothing at all to me.

IMO the xf40 would cac all day long and I don't see any marks on the rim and the vf35 may or may not CAC but it would most likely be due to the dark tone if it didn't which is a pet peeve of JA. The marks are period and grade appropriate/acceptable and the failure for a coin to CAC does not mean that it isn't a choice original coin. It simply means that JA isn't a buyer for that coin at that grade/price point. I don't think that affects/shrinks the pool of buyers as much as having a CAC sticker grows the base of potential buyers. The VF coin was crossed form an NGC slab to a PCGS slab and got a 5point bump in grade so there are 2 opinions from the TPG there too.

Mid range cir coins that are truly rare or scarce are often a confluence of compromises, once again looking at the next 100 73p's that come to market would reveal that they are indeed better preserved in the way that they are wayyyy above avg and near the top actually and among the few with unmolested surfaces.

They don't stand out to me and I had to look pretty hard to find what you're referring to in your examples.
They've got to be a bit rough before they catch my eye and not distracting at all in the coins you posted. Just my opinion..

I've got some in my collection that are real problems though and are much more obvious and sad to see in an otherwise very nice coin.

Those rim nicks are fairly minor and don't really distract from those coins. I think of a rim nick as just another contact mark in very non-focal area of the coin.

I see it now that you point it out, otherwise I wouldn'tve noticed.

They (rim nicks) are not offensive at all to me. What crypto 79 said. The xf40 has far nicer surfaces and appeal than the VF35, despite the 5 point diff in grade.

Avoid coins with problems. When it comes time to sell those "minor" problems will be viewed by potential buyers as "major" problems.

All things being equal, I believe everyone would choose a coin that doesn't have rim dings over one that does. Of course, all things are never equal.
