This is why I don't buy modern anymore unless it is Topps Heritage. Vintage cards have no redemptions, you got what came out of the pack and thats it!
I collect vintage PSA graded SF Giants, Willie Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Marichal and Perry. And modern players like Buster Posey, Will Clark and Barry Bonds.
<< <i>Hmm. Dwight Gooden auto or a Jimi Hendrix auto....hard to decide. You should have said you would rather have a Steve Stone auto. >>
The Hendrix was going to be a relic card, not an auto. >>
Ah, that's a very good point. I was assuming the Hendrix would include an auto, but now I see it would've probably been a piece of a Hendrix-worn jacket or hat or something that they cut up.
Looking back at this again, it appears that a Hendrix relic card would probably sell between $100-$175. So, yes, the OP is getting the short end of the stick and deserves to call and complain, imo.
From the penthouse to the outhouse. Topps should be ashamed of themselves. Replacing a card that would at least bring hundreds with a $5 throw away. I hope you call them!! At least you will feel better.
Well, I came home tonight, opened the mail and I see I also received a Dwight Gooden autograph. Not even a decent looking card. Is Topps !@#$% kidding me? I will be on the phone bright and early tomorrow. Will probably file a complaint with the BBB as well. I am just so mad right now.
By the way, I saw those Axl Rose redemption cards selling for big bucks on eBay. What are the chances of Topps coming through with those??? Ha !

Unless they cut up a guitar. Was the Hendrix a 1/1? I assumed it was an auto. But I dont think a Gooden auto is a "gooden" enough replacement.
This gives new definition to the term "bait & switch"...
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Someone mentioned this was to tide you over until the Hendrix card is available... true, or are they seriously thinking a Doc Gooden auto = Hendrix relic?
I hope they do you right because, as of now, they ain't even close. Give them heck tomorrow!
I'm just wondering why they sent out the redemption cards and had nothing lined up for it. My thought that his father put a stop to it. He owns the rights to his estate and has been doing some weird stuff and asking huge amounts of money. I spent 1984-2008 in the music business
<< <i>I am on hold with customer service. I am caller number 8 with a estimated hold time of 23 minutes....this could take awhile.... >>
Good Luck. The Redemption department is even more screwed up than in the past. This is what they are doing with ALL redemptions they deem will not be made.
Talk about POOR customer service. After waiting 25 minutes on hold, I started to get the canned response from the nice kid who answered the phone. He eventually tried to get his Supv on with us. After waiting again, I was told no Supv is avail. Left my number, Will be totally surprised if I get a call back. The kid also suggested that I mail the Gooden card back and request something better. What a freaking joke. They picked the wrong pooch to screw. I will not go down without a fight. Just so tired of getting sscrewed by EVERYBODY.
It looks like Topps VP Doug Kruep has a current profile on LinkedIn. If anyone here is LinkedIn user (I am not) and could provide his Topps email address, I would be most grateful. I think Doug needs to be alerted about the goings on in his customer service dept.
A $6-8 baseball player autograph should not be a substituted for a relic of a music legend. Hendrix pieces are extremely rare and are highly sought after, which is why I purchased the redemption card. Just to put this into perspective, Hendrix ticket stubs (other than Woodstock) generally sell for $150 - 600, depending on the show and condition of the ticket stub (i.e. does it contain the full band name, date, venue, etc.). I would imagine that a personal relic, such as a piece of clothing, hat, scarf, guitar pick with proper provenance would command even more than a ticket stub. Maybe 2x? 3x?

That exchange isn't even in the same solar system and sorry to hear you're going through this. If that happened to me, I would be *all* over corporate and customer service like a cheap suit.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

Or perhaps that's just wishful thinking...

That really sucks but I'll bet the person who made the decision to send the Gooden has no idea who the hell Jimi Hendrix was.
I'll bet they straighten it out for you.
I did read a few days ago that Topps tweeted they are closing the redemption replacement section for 30 days to deal with Customer Service issues or something like that. Maybe too much of this kind of stuff was happening.
I edited my post on a previous page with this info, as I was curious what a Hendrix relic might sell for.

Hi, I just wanted to update everyone as to what has transpired. After a marathon phone call to Topps, where I had waited on hold for almost 3 hours ( no joke), I finally was able to get someone on the phone who discussed the situation. They asked me for a list of people I would accept in replacement of the Hendrix card. I provided some names, and was told that I would get a call the next day to let me know what they had - well you guessed it - no call. But almost 2.week's later, I get a Eli Manning autographed card in the mail. I will post a scan of the card when I get home tonight. Its a sticker auto, but hey, its better than nothing and its better than a $2 price of garbage Dwight Golden card.
I am curious as to what other collectors have received in replacement for thier Hendrix relic.
How is it that companies are so terrible at customer service? No followup phone call as promised? Thats ridiculous.
I work for a government agency......a line of work renowned for horrible customer service...and if an employee of mine failed to make a follow up phone call, at a minimum I'd counsel them and make the follow up phone call myself.
