  • I like both sites. I'm more bound to watch my tongue over here.

BTW lord. I love my manic behavior. I just feel sorry for others, and it really isn't appropriate in the coin world.

  • << <i>I have an account at CT and tried mightily to contribute for a few months, but have not been there for two years. There were several issues that led me to stop posting there. The first was that someone else had registered "TomB" as their ID, but then never posted. Even though the name had been registered for several years without a post, the administrator would not release the name for me to use, so I went by "Tom B" and did not like that at all. Also, my older daughter had spent some length of time significantly ill in the hospital and the CT boards just fell by the wayside. Lastly, and very importantly, even though I found that the level of knowledge was lower on average, I also found that there were a small core of posters who were rather ill-informed yet who wrote and acted like they were numismatic savants. That last point annoyed me as much as any other and I didn't feel like swimming upstream anymore in my efforts to give away my experience and knowledge. >>

    Interesting.

You made 579 posts, including one thread you started giving a report on the Baltimore Show, that was well written I might add, and received a couple of thanks from two other members.

In so far as the "TomB" member, a search of that username there delivered 0 results, and quite likely could have been the username "Tomb" that prevented you from registering the moniker "TomB". I would agree with the administrators there for not relinquishing that name for your use; however, as that member had registered that username before you did. The fact they had not posted on any of the forums at CT since registering that ID, is really irrelevant.

With regards to your last statement of "a small core of posters who were rather ill-informed yet who wrote and acted like they were numismatic savants.", CT does not hold a monopoly on this as you can find other numismatic forums with this same type of group, including this one.

The ads seem more intrusive and the server seems slower.

I'm ok with the ads here, but would probably want to use an ad-blocker there.

I was on cointalk, and the kitco pms forums, and halfhunter aka john told me about CU and I've been here ever since. Don't really go anywhere else for coin or PM information.

I completely agree with all your points. My initial post in this thread stated fairly well and concisely, in my opinion, why I considered continued posting on CT as not worth my time and effort.

I must have some Salmon blood in me Tom because I have returned to CT even though I vowed I never would after my banning. FWIW, that forum was much, much better when you, Mark Feld, Jason and others from the the NGC & PCGS boards were posting there.

I'm surprised you were banned on there, Lehigh. When the system actually worked for me, (for some reason, I get error messages when I try to log in) it seemed to me like you were on track to be a mod, let alone a regular member.

Without going into all the dirty details, one of the mods banned me permanently for my actions in one lone thread in February 2011. The site owner reduced the ban to one month the following day. I did not post for there for 1 year after my banning. If you are interested in the details, here is a link to the thread about in on the NGC forum.

Why bother? Most seem like they don't want to listen anyway.

  • I do not have any problems with Coin Talk. I am not a regular poster on here and I am not a regular poster on Cointalk but I will occasionally post on something that interests me or that I have an opinion on. If I am in a sharing mood (i.e. occasionally posting a silver art bar find), then I will post it. In addition to here and Cointalk, I also post on 2 other forums (GIM2 and Bullion Stacker) with GIM2 being the main board that I post on. My main objective with any gold and silver board or collector-oriented board is to post on things that are interesting to me. It is also interesting to me to read what others post on a particular topic to get a feel for where a particular posters are coming from.
DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a '70's silver art bar expert but I try my best to play one on the Internet.

I am sorry to hear that you were banned, even for a minute.

I like CoinTalk and I do think it skews younger generally. How to say this delicately, what some of the younger posters seem to lack in knowledge, they make up for in enthusiasm and desire to learn. There are plenty of nice folks in both places, of course.

And that is why so many respect you. Your willingness to educate is truly remarkable.

  • The moderators can be arbitrary. Plus they are way too heavy-handed on copyright issues for which they need to consult a real lawyer, not just act like they know the law:

"The key concept is "fair use". Here is what the U.S. Copyright Office has to say about it. The Wikipedia article is pretty good, and much more detailed.

"Yes, there are plenty of infringement suits, but generally not against bulletin boards. One of the main factors in deciding whether a particular quote is fair use is whether it serves a commercial (vs. non-profit educational) purpose. In the case of a bulletin board, the answer is generally "non-commercial".
