    Hi Bob,
As the #5 all time in the complete Lincoln cent registry with 506 coins needed thru 2012, I'm sure you are well aware of what a 1992D close AM Lincoln cent MEANS to that Set Registry. I'm at 21 and I don't even collect these rare varieties. If more than one Lincoln cent specialist is after this coin, the sky may be the limit. My memory may be faulty but I seem to remember Stewart and Peter have the 1958DD's and Gerry does not, but I believe he does have the 1992D. I wonder why he has closed his set at this time. Take care.

But..unlike the 1909 MPL, there will be other 1992 D found. I watched as the 1998 Proof close AM once had a lofty price of near $3000. It is now falling in price and closer to $600 now and I bet $400 a year from now. For me, I would gladly take a check for $20,000 for most of my varieties and go buy a real coin of value, like that 1909 VDB MPL which I might add, some of those folks also need. But to each their own.

Bob, Did a quick pop check of this variety.
    PCGS graded and attributed coins.
    coin # lookup
    391427 5 in bn
    391428 1 in rb 64rb
    391429 0 in rd
    83099 6 in bn highest is 62bn
    83100 0 in rb
    83101 2 in 64rd
grand total @ PCGS 14 coins The 64rb in question is third finest graded at PCGS.

As you and I both know, there are other C/P's varieties with much lower pops. This one has been promoted from within PCGS and is included in one or more of the major variety catagories.
    How's the surfin been??????
  • WaterSportWaterSport Posts: 6,696 ✭✭✭✭✭
Exactly, and that pop will rise. No doubt double in a year. Its only be around maybe 2 years???

Anyway, small surf this time of year which is fine by me. I should be paddling out tomorrow morning.

The 1992-D Close AM was discovered by a collector Parker Ogilvie of Massach, per Ken Potter's article in the 6/5/06 Coin World. People have been looking since that time, with meager results, as you can see.

I doubt if they're that many MS specimens around after 20 years, and I REALLY doubt we're going to see a doubling of the pop in a year. The 1998-S and 1999-S proof varieties were only found the year before that (per Coin World), and have MUCH larger pops.

Nearing 20k with three days left on the auction! I guess all it takes is two strong bidders. And all of this for the lack of a millimeter between the A and M. Was wondering how many unsearched 92-D rolls there are out
there? One roll find like the 09 s over horizontal s years ago and the prices are in the crapper. But on the other hand, if few are found in the next ten years the current price level may be cheap. Both the 09 s/s 1501 and the 10s/s 502 populations in ms64 and up have remained very low since PCGS started attibuting them. (5 or 6 years now?) Seven in rb and rd for the 09 s/s 1501 and five for the 10 s/s 502 in rb and rd. I would guess as the
demand for those varieties goes up (i.e. new collectors of such) that so too would the pricing levels. Just some thoughts. Mel

Same could be said for the 1972 Die #4, a very long sought after specimen..and with a PCGS pop of 7 (one more than the 1992 d) It still only brings $2500-$3500. But hey, someone wants this coin bad, its just that the 1909 VDB Matte Proof is currently at the same price - will both coins be at the same price next year this time??? I think not.

Look, folks. The point is that this is a variety that just hasn't shown up much, and that people have been looking for. The rare 1999 Wide AM has considerably more pop numbers than the 1992-D, but sells regularly for $1000 for 66MSrd.

I don't know what this specimen is drawing these strong numbers in particular (there ARE some red specimens), but I do know that Lincoln variety people have been looking for this one without much success since 2006, and rolls of 92-D have been costly when they have come on the market as a consequence.

Sometime varieties are well-known and rare. This one seems to be. Maybe this one is well-know (as opposed to others) because it's on the Registry. But when you think about it, how did ANY of the old varieties become well-known, as opposed to others?

When it comes down to it, wasn't always because somebody did their "marketing?"

  • Remember that manorcourtman bought the first 2 raw off eBay for about $1,500 each (I was the underbidder on the first one) from a guy in San Antonio and subsequently made them both PCGS 64RD's & got PCGS to put them in the pop report (but later reneged to sell one each to me & another prominent top registry collector for $5k!). I got the 3rd one in a PCGS holder - a cross from an ANACS61RB to a PCGS58RB) and subsequently sold it on eBay several years ago for either $2,750 or $3,250 (I think the former as I recall).

Bob, I think you have more of a chance finding an '09 VDB proof in pocket change than one of these.
  • dpooledpoole Posts: 5,940 ✭✭✭✭✭
I agree. These things are hard to come by.

Wondercoin sold a 62Bn in April of 2009 (I think NGC) for $4995. In 3/09, a PCGS 58 sold on Teletrade for $4100.

David ... If memory serves me right, I believe I sold a PCGS-AU53 back then for around $3,000 and held on to the 62BN (which I thought at the time was actually undergraded). At least that is what I thought I did when I received an unsolicited email last week offering to buy my MS62BN and I responded "15% less than what the MS64RD sells for" (as I had -0- interest in selling the coin now). They are great modern coins in my opinion.

Be serious, Roger. There are more 92-d CAM's to be found. How many more? Now that is the real question

  • DCW,

I believe the total pop of these in existence are less than the total pop of '09 VDB proofs. I believe it is a genuine rarity on the order of the 69-S DDO #1 (of which I doubt anyone proposes has a higher total pop in existence greater than the '09 VDB proof). Further, I doubt many have searched circ coins for the '09 VDB proofs anywhere near the extensive searches that numerous people have undertaken to try to find another one of these in probably millions of rolls. I'd wager that the total PCGS pop on these NEVER exceeds or surpasses that of the '09 VDB proof.

Remember, every now and then someone DOES find a new 69-S DDO but those finds are FEW AND FAR BETWEEN & finds of the 92-D Close AM will follow a similar success rate IMHO.

You guys do realize that there are a dies worth of every variety made to start with.

So how ever many cents they get per die......that is how many there were to start with on this variety.

I would NOT pay this kind of money for any modern.....even if it was a dime I needed.
