What a difference a new camera makes

robertprrobertpr Posts: 6,862 ✭✭✭
Well I've been trying to image this coin for a while. Just got a new Canon T2i and a Sigma 90mm Macro lens. I have upgraded from a Nikon D70. The tethering software was included, unlike with Nikon, where it is purchased seperately. The tethered live view makes a HUGE difference in being able to get the shot right the first time! Here is the first image from my new setup.

Anyone care to guess the grade? No cheating!

MS65 and like the look of the images. Would of gone a grade higher except for the print.

The Sigma lens is more likely why you were able to get the shot, not the new camera. I use a Nikon D70 for all my shots, but I pair it with a Nikkor (Nikon) 105mm lens, and it works beautifully.

I feel like the images are a bit over exposed, I would bump up your F-stop 2 points or so and see if you like the result.

Lens and lighting. Not necessarily the camera.
The morgan is at least a 64, if not a 65.

I would put the quarter as similar but more likely a 65.
Picture enlarges the hits, but I think too many to call it a 66.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I think the WQ is at least an MS66.

Nice photos, one of these days I'll get a nice camera set up... but I keep spending that "camera fund" on more coins!!!!!

The Morgan is probably MS64 and the Washington I would give MS65+

    Nice coins!

<<Lens and lighting. Not necessarily the camera.>>

Lighting was the issue for me, until I discovered what my camera liked.
I use the GE 20 watt Daylight 6500k 1200 lumens CFL. Pretty good results.
The camera, Fuji S3280 14MP, 24X superwide, P&S. Bought it used for $100 from a pawn shop.
Nice pics robertpr. What type of bulb did you use? Someday I'm gonna pony up and buy a DSLR, but for now, my crappy P&S will have to do.

The Morgan is a 64 and the Washington is a 66.

I think the biggest difference for me was not the lens or the camera or the lighting: the setup is very close to what I had before with my D70. The biggest difference is Live View Tethered shooting capabilities which allow me to see the shot on a large computer screen for focusing, and to see the effects of moving the lighting around before taking the shot, whereas before I had to take a whole bunch of shots before I was satisfied. This makes a huge, huge, huge difference!!
