Another Chinese counterfeit half dime being offered on eBay

MrHalfDimeMrHalfDime Posts: 3,440 ✭✭✭✭
There is yet another bogus counterfeit Draped Bust half dime for sale on eBay, an 1805. It is obviously one of the Chinese counterfeits, and not a genuine U. S. Mint product. I have sent an email to the seller, but he has yet to respond. Even at a bid of just $100, this is way over priced. Prospective bidders should not be deceived by this counterfeit.

Reported as unacceptable image possibly hiding a counterfeit.

The Walker seems to be the only real one to me.

  • Not much new for ebay. I've heard rumor you could get close to buying counterfeits of nearly any date US coin with sufficient searching on the bay.
  • Whats the giveaway on this one thats being counterfeit?

Hard to say since it's a" private listing" and I can't see the larger pictures. image I HATE ebay "private sales" because they prevent stuff like this from getting the attention it deserves.

Here is a genuine example in VF-35.

    imageimage

    Edited to add:

Every 1805 half dime I have seen is weak on the reverse opposite the bust of Ms. Liberty. I've seen two die rotations of this coin. The other one is rotated so that the reverse weakness is more to the top of the clouds on the reverse instead of the right side as it is on my coin.

From the tiny picture it appears that this "1805 half dime" is fully struck, which is never the case on a genuine piece.

From what I could tell, it looked like a sharply struck XF/AU, and it sold for $299 - someone got a heck of deal image

I get the feeling that you will not get a response from the seller. Have you notified eBay? They can take a sale down even after it occurs.

How do you know it is a Chinese counterfeit? Are there diagnostics?

If I could see a larger picture, I probably could tell you more.

The buyer of this piece at $299 has got be greedy or dumber than a bag of hammers. Even a low grade example of this date sells for more than four times that, and a really sharp one brings a five figure price easily.

This reminds me of a guy who showed up to our local club one night with a 1796 silver dollar he'd bought off the Internet for $200. It was a "naked eye" counterfeit because the bust of Ms. Liberty was off-center to the left like a well known 1795 variety. He asked me what I thought of his purchase, and when I told him it was counterfeit, he got angry at me. It did not matter than a real one was worth over $10,000 with the amount of detail that his counterfeit had. It was a matter of shooting the messenger.

I suspect that the seller himself, or an associate, 'purchased' the coin to remove it from auction. From the time that I first notified the seller that his coin was bogus until it 'sold' and was gone from auction was a very short period of time, perhaps 2-3 hours. I still have not heard back from the seller, nor do I suspect I will.

The coin has the 'look' of the ubiquitous Chinese counterfeits, and as Bill Jones states, a Buy-it-Now price of $300 for a VG is unrealistic, suggesting that the seller knew what he was selling. This may also explain the terribly small images he posted.

No, I did not notify eBay.

I did notify eBay and got this reply today so the sale may be voided . I do not know that for sure but here is the email I got from Judith.

just to add to the fray

i am of the opinion the seller may not posses the coins but just the images.

the 1916-d in the pcgs holder seems to match up to the heritage images through the pcgs cert verification link

with all the other issues of the account it is hard to imagine the account owner possessing that higher valued dime in the holder.

one thing that stopped me in my tracks was it looked like the account owner had an original image and marks on the coin matched those of the heritage sold coin

    strange

My specimen of the 1805 half dime, in considerably worse shape, has the same reverse weakness mentioned by BillJones.

"My specimen of the 1805 half dime, in considerably worse shape, has the same reverse weakness mentioned by BillJones."

Remember, too, that there is just one known die marriage for the 1805 half dime, meaning that they were all struck from the same die pair, and with such a small mintage (15,600), they were probably all struck on the same day.

As would be expected, my VF-20 example exhibits the same reverse weakness described by Bill Jones.

  • My dead giveaway that its counterfeit

It was struck with artificial wear. It looks like crap and the wear is uneven. Dead giveaway
