Friday Metal Porn - June 22, 2012

I decided to try to take advantage of the lower metals prices by going to a coin show. Here are a couple of metal purchases that I bought today from a coin show in the Atlanta, GA area:

It is a 0.025 troy oz gold coin. Supposedly the world's smallest gold coin. I paid $43.00 for it today (spot gold was $1572.30/oz). This is the smallest gold coin that I bought. I thought that it was an interesting find.

Of course, I also went silver art bar hunting at this coin show and found and bought this:

It is a 1974 United States Silver Corporation "Camel Rentals" silver art bar. I paid $28.00 for it today (spot silver was $26.90/oz).

1912 Canadian $10 gold coin to compliment my 1912 $5 gold piece. These were minted on the same standard as the American gold coins of this period (.900 fine, 0.48oz agw). One of my favorite reverse designs. Also a 100 oz engelhard bar. Too bad both were earlier this week before the mini plunge!

That canadian gold is very nice, Pokermandude! image

Love that little coin, 1970SilverArt! Though, I don't think it still is the smallest gold coin.
I owned a 1/50 Elephant from Somalia and the Perth Mint is now issuing 0.5g gold Kanagaroo coins.

I saw only JM bars for the RNB. The hallmark seems MV (correct?) but I couldn't find anything in the website I have in my bookmarks.
I think you did great, whatever you paid for them! They should be scarce to say the least.

You are right because I have seen smaller gold coins than the one that I bought yesterday. I suspect that at the time this gold coin was minted in 2001, it was probably the world's smallest coin then. It is an interesting find for me because 1.) I rarely buy any gold since my first love is '70's silver art bars and 2.) It is the smallest gold coin that I bought.

The "Camel Rentals" silver art bar that I bought yesterday was the only one that I bought because that I was only one that I liked and there were not very many silver art bars at this show overall IMO. The only time that I buy any fractional gold is when I end up not finding as many silver art bars that I wanted to buy at that time. I also suspect that some dealers were holding back inventory because spot fell from $28-ish to $26-ish and those dealers did not want to sell at this time for a loss. I do not blame them for that. I spoke to one of those dealers at the coin show that did exactly that because they bought when spot was in the $29's.

How was that Atlanta show? Debating swinging by today.

For me personally, it was a disappointing show because I did not find very many silver art bars that I wanted. I ended up buying only that "Camel Rentals" bar and that was it in terms of silver art bar purchases at that show. That does happen to me every once in a while when I do not find much that I looking for. I still like the silver art bar hunt and I was still able to relax and have fun talking to other dealers and collectors at this show.

There was several tables that had regular gold and silver available and the prices where not too bad. $28.00 for .999 generic silver seemed to be the lowest price that I could find at that show. They also had some 1-oz gold Krugs and some 1-oz GAEs there as well as some fractional gold coins.

The good thing that came out of me going to this coin show that made it more worth while was that I was able to pick up some fractional gold coins and the premium that I paid above melt was not too bad IMO.

Yeah you should go to this coin show if you are already in the Atlanta area. I was not planning to go back to the coin show today because it is a 2-hour drive for me and I just wanted to sit back and just be lazy today. image

If you go to this show, I hope that you find what you are looking for. If you are looking for regular gold and silver bullion, then you should do ok.

I like that Canadian $10 gold.

Here are some more Engelhard items off ebay.

The Commemorative Sports Series is marked on the reverse as "The Engelhard Mint" Five of them are in what I believe is the original packaging.

Bought these yesterday at an antique shop for melt.
I paid $21 each for the morgans and $27 each for the silver eagles. $8 for the Franklin.
    $200 total.

That is an excellent find on those Engelhard bars IMO. This is the complete 6-bar set. Although the mintage number for each bar in this set is 5000, these are apparently hard to find because I have yet to see any of these at a LCS or at a coin show. The sports-themed silver art bars such as those are very cool to look at IMO. Congrats on your Engelhard find. image

    There's a deal.

I tried buying circ Morgans at the B & M today and they were asking $25 and would not budge.
