Should I buy the Silver Maples at Apmex?

tneigtneig Posts: 1,505 ✭✭✭
I only have one maple. I heard these are the second best to ASE, eh.

Anyway, prices are creeping up and I'm considering the special at apmex because I haven't found another place to get say 20 for the $2.49 over spot.
Of course, silver price is creeping up by the second.

If you buy 25 they are slightly cheaper at ProvidentMetals.

My 2 local places are $2-2.50 over on maples, with no shipping or CC charges. Figure another $1.25 on top of that $2.50 if you order online with a CC. No local places around you to check out?

    Good advice. Thanks much.

My local shop can't sell maples cheap, very unfortunately, so that's out, and why I only have one. ps: thats a nice local shop price. I better expand my scope of shops then.

I'm still in the small buyer range 10-20 today, so shipping does affect my decisions, but sales like at Apmex today spark my interests. I'm looking up Provident now.

My best deals are cash deals at the pawn shop, but inventory is "whatever".

For instance, do I buy the maples for $31 at this second plus shipping - getting some 'good stock' at a decent price,
or go to pawn shop and buy his 10oz rough silver random bars at $1 over....

With all these smaller-ish buys you're doing you might be better off just using some money for a bigger order for your online purchases instead of chasing after those apmex email specials a roll at a time. Would cut the extras down for your costs.

Doesn't have to be all the same obviously, but if you're looking at 20~oz every couple of days basically why don't you just do your online 100+oz purchase at once where you're not getting chewed up with all those separate CC (if charging) & shipping costs.

At this point I'm only ordering online when I want something specific that I can't get local. And when I shop local it's whatever is around. 90%, loose ASEs/maples, spot-ish gold, whatever my dude has and deals me.

    Stackin' is mackin'!

    Your quote is dated...

"Available now for as low as $2.49 over spot!"

    This is for the 2012

BTW, the price quoted is via bank wire....if paying via cc, add about another $1 per oz.

Thanks for the linkage! I really like gville's website, seems very user-friendly. I'll check out Tulving too, I've seen that name mentioned a ton on these boards.

From the Tulving website: "We currently overnight, for free, all gold, platinum, and palladium bullion coin orders. Currently, we offer free tracking of your gold, palladium and platinum orders"

and they don't take check like APMEX. Why only bank wire? I wonder. Never actually paid for anything with a bank wire before.

Bank wires take much less time and once the funds are in their account, they know for a fact that they actually have the money. They can't "bounce".

Just go to your bank teller and say you'd like to send a bank wire. They'll get you to fill in the needed info (receiving company name, receiving bank name, routing and account numbers, etc). Will probably cost you $15-40 depending on the bank you use.

Tulving does accept checks, just not for your first purchase

tulving conducts all of their business over the phone. The wire transfer from your bank account directly to theirs gets you immediate shipping once they receive it, usually by next day. I have heard you can do one on-line if you have an account with BOA, never tried it, usually walk in to the bank. Have done tons (actually hundreds of pounds) of business with them, never a problem. The "go to" place for quantity.

Thanks for the feedback and references! Always good to have refs.

BoA and Wells Fargo (my bank) have a relatively new arrangement where you can receive and send funds online via email addys and cell phone #'s ... Before you balk ... I'd much rather hand out an email or cell # than my bank account # ... also, you can transfer across banks.

I'm wondering if Tulving has this relationship with BoA, perhaps I could use the same system via my WF account.

wiring funds is simple and secure. Your bank sends the money electronically to the bank and account number you provide them. Tulving will email you this info once you lock in your price over the phone. Tulving doens't see your bank info, their bank does.

My roll of 2012 maples is milkspotted like cereal bowl shrapnel. Something to consider if you're looking to buy.
  • derrybderryb Posts: 37,014 ✭✭✭✭✭
silver maple bullion is notorious for spotting. Buy it only as a bullion play. As a stacker, spotting or tarnish do not matter to me or affect the value of my bullion, all of the silver content is still there.

The price isn't going to run away from you, rendering you unable to ever complete another purchase - so don't be in such a hurry. If it does run away from you before you can make that "last purchase", you will know that you've been smart all this time in buying precious metals. And in that event, the cash you still have on-hand is something you will need in the short term anyway.

In both buying and selling, I think it's good practice to keep things as standardized as possible for record keeping and eventual tax purposes. So, if you buy some odd lot of Silver Eagles, you eventually need to top it off to make an even roll. The roll is easier to sell as well.

I still regard precious metals as a depository savings bank much more so than as an investment or a speculation. It helps your perspective along the way.
