    if you collect Jeffersons?
    You know it.

    Raw? Graded?
    Yes.

    With or with out varieties?
    Not hardcore about varieties.

    What you hope to accomplish?
I'd like to "finish" my 38-42 proof set before thinking too much past that.

    How far along you are?
With my proof set? Done, but looking for three upgrades image Raw set? I need to find three more nice coins to finish 38-11 business strikes. Slabbed ... Missing more than I care to think about. It's depressing.

    Collect Jeffersons? No, not really

Would Prefer PCGS Graded in the MS66 or higher realm...with FS. image

I love me some varieties! Working on Mercury Dime Varieties for the past two years.

I would really like to have a high end MS FS PCGS graded set of War Issue Jefferson Nickels all shiny and white. I also want to cover 1941,1942,1950,1969...and a number of other birth year sets for family members in as high MS as I can including varieties.

I have not started due to a lack of funds and my current focus of Mercury Dime Varieties.

    Thanks for the chance! image

I started collecting the Jefferson nickel series back in 1960 when you could still find 1939-D's in circulation. I filled up a Whitman Blue tri-fold album that ran from 1938-1961 with circulated coins up to the 50's and BU examples there after, even writing in the dates and filling up all the blank holes. Silver 'War Nickels' could be had by the handful, their color very noticeable from the rest of the nickel alloy strikes.

In the years following, I would pick up BU examples of the early issues (1938-1957) at the occasional coin dealer and from catelog ads from the then current coin magazines.

It was not until the internet came along did my collection of Jefferson nickels expand. I started filling in examples shopping e-Bay and started to buy from dealers who started the web sites on the net. It was then that I discovered 'full step' Jefferson's and exactly how hard it was to get a truly 'full step' example in some years, the 'challenge' was on!

I don't know what ever happened to that original tri-fold that got me started, I'm quite certain it was sold for a few dollars at one the numerous yard sales my Mom had while I was away.
The search continues but not as fervent as I did in the late 90's.

it's a great affordable series to collect, layered for what ever your budget will allow.

Thanks for the generous give-a-way...I think I have 9 specific designations I look for in old Jefferson's, from Doubled Dies to RPM's.

I collect Jefferson's in the blue whitman folders just for fun. No varieties as of yet. I have filled up one set completely of circulated and have a couple more that are partially full. Most of the time I buy nickel rolls from the bank and search for dates. I bought the 50 D and the silver ones but have found a lot of the others or bought from dealer junk boxes. The hardest thing for me was trying to find a 50 D that was circulated that I could put in my book at a coin show. Couldn't find one so had to buy an uncirculated one and put it in a 2X2 and staple it to the paper page in the folder.
  • if you collect Jeffersons? Yes I do

Raw? Graded? Both for me. Most of my graded ones are War's

With or with out varieties? I have very few varieties but look for them some.

What you hope to accomplish? Nothing really, I just enjoy collecting them but I would like a nice 1955 d/s and the one your have here.

How far along you are? Lots of them. Raw many unc's just need the varieties mainly.

    Thank you

Do I collect Jefferson Nickels? I collect them in just about every way you can collect them. The only way I don't is proofs. I have a Dansco that is complete through the 40's with all gem+ coins, still working on the 50's, 60's etc. I have owned every major variety but I sold my MS64 1942-D over Horizontal D last year. The guy who bought it, sent it to PCGS and it upgraded to MS65. Go figure! I have the 1939 QDR in MS67 and the 1943-P Doubled Eye in MS67 FS. My registry set 1938-1964 is almost complete with only 8 more coins to go. Check it out!

I have a Jefferson nickel collection I have had for 30 years or so. Avg circulated with quite a few BU's. All raw in a
Coinmaster Album and all require a dip to cleanse them from the residue created by the album. I have never tried
to collect varieties, but neither did I collect Mercury Dime varieties until Greg, Jon and Tony got me interested in
them. My set is through 1977S. It's funny but your post made me open an album that had not been opened in
    years! Thanks for reminding me.

I like cherrypicking Jefferson varieties. I've found most of the major ones, but still haven't found the 1946- D/Inverted D or the 1946-S DDO. At some point, I'd like to assemble an MS variety set, but I can't afford it right now (unless I cherrypick them!). Thanks for the chance- I love that variety!

Hello and thanks for the chance!! Yes I do collect these pretty nickel's and have purchased a very large Wayte Raymond coin album for my collection of Jeffs. I am off to a good start and it's a very slow process but I am enjoying every bit of it. It started with some really pretty proofs and has turned into a full blown event lol. Thanks again for the shot as I would love to add one of these to my Jefferson collection.....Joe

I do have a complete uncirculated and proof set in my Dansco album.

I would like to aquire a few nice Jefferson varieties, as I am a variety collector, mostly Lincoln Cents, but love varieties in smaller denominations. I also want to save the sets for my two kids, so when they are old enough to appreciate my hobby, they can judge for themselves and at the same time see nice examples of the different coins out there that can be collected.

all into PCGS slabed, and I also want it with the varietys, for which I need the
    39 rev of 40 and a 40 rev of 40, A few monthes back I aquired my 40 rev of 38
and love it, when I tell family & friends what I paid for it, I love there precious

I like varieties, but my Jefferson collecting comes almost entirely from roll-searching (OBW rolls) So I don't come across varieties very often. It is fun looking for FS examples...I currently have 40 rolls of 1968-S, most of them have JUNK strikes...those looking for FS are a dedicated sort, patience is a must! I mostly collect Jeffersons (and Memorial Cents for that matter) because one can purchase rolls at reasonable prices still.

Except for war nickles (which I've rarely found) I've got a nearly complete set that I've collected from circulation.
They're fun for exactly that reason.

I first started collecting Jeffersons with my Dad when I was in Junior high over 25 years ago. After he passed away in 2009 my interest in coin collecting was rekindled. Without a lot of expendable cash to spend on coins I picked up my old Whitman Jefferson nickel folders, and began roll searching bank boxes. After nearly 2 years and 108,000 coins I finally found my last coin a 1955 plain. I completed my entire Jefferson nickel set from circulation.

Among my finds was a 1939 Doubled Monticello, although that would be my only current variety I do enjoy the hunt. My circulation Jefferson set currently resides in those Blue Whitman folders my Dad bought for me so many years ago.

Thanks for the chance to share that story.
  • johnny9434johnny9434 Posts: 28,406 ✭✭✭✭✭
yes i collect them. i do like raw jeffersons and the variety type. my favorite is the 1939 double die reverse and looking to expand on the other varieties as well. (as the money warrents it as of late)
  • toyz4geotoyz4geo Posts: 1,484 ✭✭✭✭✭
I do collect them but I think they started it first.

I had always (it seems) had a circulated set around in the Whitman folder, but I was in a coin shop a couple of years ago and I picked up a partial BU set in the book type Whitmen folder. I had a BU set of war nickels so I put them in the folder. I picked up some of the proofs I needed and a few others here and there and just completed it this past month when I picked up a BU 1939-S that I was missing.

I started picking up slabbed war nickels for my type set, ending up with a nice MS67FS but ended up with a couple of other dates. With some help from board members, I completed a FS registery set of war nickels. Now I want to upgrade it.

Is there a 12 step program available for me? I didn't really start out collecting these things. I think I am an accidental Jefferson nickel collector.

One of my favorite series. You can still pull these from circulation and find nice AU coins all the way back to 38 with some searching. I have only album sets and I dont worry too much about FS. Two nice BU sets, one is 100% that has nice eye appeal (rainbow rim toning, etc) and the other about 75%. I have several circulated sets grading from AU to VG with attempts to put the matching coins together from 38-61. Will probably end up giving a set to each of my kids(at least thats the plan, assuming they like coins). Thanks for the opportunity!

My collection started with a Whitman folder. I still like the series, especially the war nickels. A well-struck specimen in this series, to me, is a thing of beauty.
Let's try not to get upset.

Jefferson's are one we collect, but don't focus on.
Most are raw and in the album. A few are slabbed either for grade or for cool toning.

I prefer the Jeffies raw and we will sometimes pull out the Dansco of them and look through them. For the sets that we collect but don't focus on, the focus is more on the look and the story. So, of course, the 1950-D is there. We like the overdates you can see without a microscope in the coins we collect.

We are mostly done, except for a few. Most have come from searching many many many rolls from the bank. For some, we have purchased them at coin shows.

The accomplishment is to how complete modern coins and go backwards.....kind of a "Type+" sort of thing. Get what's affordable now, while it is, then work back. If goes to my son, so he has input on them, and if it isn't worth much, then maybe it will go down to his children someday without worrying of being ripped off or sold off before then.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

my forum avatar and my forum participation sort of give me away, don't you think!!??!! image remember the little grading test i did?? i should do another since there seems to be more collectors of the series that have "come out of the closet" in the past few years.

i collect Proofs almost exclusively. i sold off most of my Mint State collection about five years ago when grading and pricing just became too hard to understand. it seemed the best direction for me. i started a Proof Registry Set mainly to show what i had and to interact with other like-minded collectors. competing in that area is a bit expensive and pointless, so i've tried to assemble the best coins i can find without regard to grade and not get too hung up on what the sticker says. also, i have bought whatever toned Proofs i can find and have a fairly large number of raw coins. i haven't totally given up on Mint State coins; i always save whatever FS coins i can find and always, always look for the better Varieties like the one you're offering.

Collect raw jeffs.Currently have a whitman album half full and am concentrating on the open spots in the "50s".I am trying to collect from circulation which is a challenge.Dont really know anything about the varieties yet but seeing as how the series is not widely collected,it will be possible to complete.

  • I have collected Jeffersons since I was a kid. I think I might have a few in slabs, but 99% of my collection is raw. When I was about 10 my Dad took me to a coin shop and I spotted a blue 1960 nickel. The dealer took the time to explain that it was toning that was often found on older proof nickels. He sold that one to me for 50¢ and its still in my collection today, along with many other toned proofs. Nowadays, I still search boxes of nickels regularly and keep 2 albums for my finds: 1 with the higher grade AU+ and proof examples I've found, and another with the regular circulated coins. I'm only missing the 50-D from that second Dansco.
I've only recently started to look for the varieties, but a I can't say I've had any luck yet.

I like to collect Jefferson's from circulation to fill holes in the Number 1 Jefferson series coin folders. With some additional purchases, I put together one set, which I have since sold. I'm on my second set now, about 1/3 of the way completed.

Putting together a set of Jefferson Nickels have about 70% complete but having a hard time trying to find some of the cheaper 50-60s issues. Always looking for good 1954 s/d and 55 d/s varieties as well.

Hi, I decided to collect a BU set of Jefferson's raw and put them in a Dansco album with all of the coins dated after 1964 taken from mint and proof sets-I am a tough picker and only picked the nicest ones from the sets. This is a slow effort for me as my other sets come first and this is sort of on the back burner. I have purchased some of the war nickel dates but need most others from 1938-1955 I do like this variety but have not seen one in person yet. I do collect varieties when they come along at a reasonable price even if circulated. I have the 1939 DDR. Thanks for the chance.--Bob

Thanks for offer! cool! First of all, I LOVE the Jeffies! Esp. the varieties. I think the silver jeffs are underrated, also, the double-die Monticello is one of the best variety, along with your 1942D/D.I've been collecting the Jeffersons ever since I started collecting coins(1990).The SMS nickles are in a class of their own. Very special when you think that those years (3) are few and far between! When they changed the design, that was a milestone (2004) in the series of the Jefferson tradition. What a gamble on the U.S. Mint! In my eyes, the gamble worked. The collecting public is even more interested in these gems then ever before!Including ,yours truly. I have many old Jeffs as well as the newer Jeffs (2004-2006). I'm still keeping the faith in these to grow even more in popularity, maybe like the older ones, esp. the varieties. Well that's my take on the remarkable design of Felix O. Schlag.
