A Standing Liberty Quarter Full Head Detail Most Have Never Seen...

BroadstruckBroadstruck Posts: 30,497 ✭✭✭✭✭
Even if your chasing fully struck Standing Liberty Quarters in 100% Ultimate Full Head MS67or higher you almost never see a twisted braid of hair right over the ear hole.

A crude old close-up of one of my 1920-D's with the full coin below -

struck through "lint mark" - what ever that line is continues out the forehead.?
i dont think that is an intended design detail.

It's a raised die crack that starts at the rim just above the E in Liberty, extends through her forehead and terminates at the hairline.

Even on this hammered one some parts of the design are weak. A pity they could not have made a good number of proofs to truly express the design.

That die must have cracked pretty early on.

i have always felt that this series suffers from uneven strikes to a higher degree than most others. while some series' might have areas of weak strike such as a high central point of detail, SLQ's often are weak in different areas.

I don't know where you find these coins Frank, but this one is over the top !! Very nice piece and thanks for showing such a well struck example....Joe

This degree of "Full Head" strength is so rare that the industry agrees to tolerate lesser strikes as "Full Head," even though they are not THIS full.

Full shield, too. That in and of itself is unusual.

Nice. Not every FH SLQ has a Full Shield with all of the rivets. It is nice to see that this example achieves that and what I would refer to as a Full Strike! I wish a lot of the designations would go away (FH, FB, FS, etc) and just simply be replaced with Full Strike. It is sad when you see a coin designated with FH and then a terrible shield.

    Nice example, Broadstruck!

I have always thought that the FH element on the SLQ is the only design where the "full anything" enhances the appearance of the coin.

Unless my eyes deceive me, the crack appears to go beyond the back of her head almost to the rim, although in a much fainter manner.

Your OP image never did pop up on Firefox, but I did see it on tinypic...very nice detail indeed! I have a similar die crack into the head of Liberty, albeit slightly higher, and she has a pretty detailed head as well.
