It does have a numerical grade from our hosts...what do you think it is? I will post the result later. image

Can't see the obverse very well due to darkness of the pic. I'd call it 45. Nice coin!

Tough coin and a date that doesn't come very nice. The disparate obverse toning probably makes it look more worn than it is. I'll say 40. Reverse looks better than that to me.

Overall EF-40, the reverse seem to be better than the obverse.
  • Genuine, heat damage.

    I'm with the 40 camp.

Well thanks for your opinions, I think it's an XF-40 too...nobody got it right. I think it got punished for how dark it is (which is unfortunate). I think the reverse has AU-50 details, and the Obverse VF-35/XF-40 details. There isn't any heat damage, my photography skills would probably get a grade of D- if I was in a class image

The last photos are a big improvement, and like others have said, looks like XF detail for sure.
I have a nice original 1838 SQ with comparable detail that NGC also graded VF30.....so maybe it's me image

I was thinking 35-40 myself as well, I think they are being kinda tough on darker coins lately.

Perhaps the two tone affect with the legs and arms brighter than the rest of the obverse prompted the graders to take 10 points off. There could also be some limited porosity which prompted a down grade. Years ago NGC body bagged a Seated quarter that looked a bit like this on me. I thought that the body bag was unwarranted, and I sold the coin to a dealer, still at a profit including the lost grading fee, to a wholesale dealer at the very first show I offered it.

  • Based on the original pictures, I would have guessed EF 40.

It's definitely a 35-40 coin imo. As already mentioned it looks to have been netted down for a somewhat dark obverse and considerable contrasting obv highpoint flatness.

Just for comparison here's my 40 graded by our hosts within the last twelve months. Based on the two, if mine is 40 your's should be 45+. I'd send to CAC and go for the Platinum! Wanna trade? image
