Questions about some Proof Jefferson Nickels.

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well, three questions to be exact..................

1. How long has the 1968-S RPM/FS-501 been around??
2. Does anyone have an idea on what the numbers are in PCGS plastic??
3. When did 1972-S Jeffersons graded PCGS PR69DCAM become so expensive??

Thanks in advance.

I can't help much on the first two questions, but it seems to me that the inception of the Registry had something to do with the values of early '70's nickels in 69 dcam.

I can remember putting my set together in 2003 and prices were already high at that point. The 71, 72, 73, 74, and 75's were all priced much higher than the later dates. We all know that up until about 1977 or 1978, many of the nickels were not dcam so finding a pristine dcam was much more difficult.

Fast forward to 2012 and the 71's and 72's remain elusive, while the 73's thru 75's have come down in price - presumably due to increased supplies.

i'm curious to know what the graded pop is on the 1972 vs. 1973??? i recall the latter was riding high at about $175 and a large submission(about 100-150 coins) blew it down to about $25 almost overnight. i suppose i assumed wrongly that the former had succumbed in the same manner but since i have no access to a pop report i'm uncertain. the same is true about the 1968-S RPM; i wasn't familiar with the variety and can find no pricing/pop/reference to it so i need help.

I have little knowledge in this area. All I can say to item #3 is that the general quality of Proofs from the 1972 era was much lower than it is today. Two sided D-Cam coins with unimpaired surfaces are scarce. Unlike the old cello packs, many of the Proof sets that have been retained in their mint packages have spotted, toned or gotten cloudy. It really surprises me that the overall quality of Proof sets that I see offered for sale from this era is so low.

good answer, James, i guess i desrved that!!image

it is a Variety that has gone unnoticed by me(though it's in my 4th edition CPG) and when i looked around some i could find nothing else and i don't recall ever hearing it talked about. this means i should probably add it to my list of coins to watch for. it only adds a little more interest to the 1968 Proof Set, a cheapie that already contains some valuable coins.

    keets,

The 1968-S RPM/FS-501 has been listed in Cherry Pickers forever. I could not find my First Edition, but it goes way back. I find it quite amazing that only one of these has been graded by PCGS, which is sitting in the Corso Proof Set. My understanding is this piece came out of an old ANACS holder. There has to be thousands of them ou there, but where? I'm not huge into proofs, but I have been looking for one for quite some time. I love those varieties! This is the only coin I need in my Complete Variety Proof Set. Well, everyone but Corso needs this one for thier Seets!!

    I can't help any on the 1972-S. All I know is I have a PR68DCAM.

when my curiosity was piqued i discovered what you state about the Corso Collection, it seemed to be the only coin listed anywhere in the Registry. if it's truethat it is also the only example certified by PCGS i am amazed!!! those 1968 Sets are comon, common, common----------so where are all the RPM Jeffersons at?? i believe that if the forum searches en masse we shall find at least one.image

Let's get'em started!!! Need to find at least 2.......I want one!

keets - Yes, this one baffles the mind. If there is one there has to be several thousand! This should not have been a Mint error that would have been noticed and pulled from production?

I'd like to clarify one point on when the 68's RPM was listed in the CPG.

I own copies of all editions and it is not listed until the 4th edition which is dated 2000.

As an aside, I had a very nice chat with JT Stanton at the Goldsboro, NC coin show this past Saturday.
