<< <i>I bet I can often tell if a Lincoln is one of the following years from looking at the reverse, 1973, 1982, 1983, 1984. Others I can be correct within a modest range. For nickels 1971,81,87 are some that I might be able to tell. I think D coins of clad denominations can sometimes have a unique prooflike look to the reverse for 1980-1984. SBA's I think I could tell the mint mark but not necc the year. >>
On the cents I'm not sure what you're using on the 82-83-84 but the 73 is easy, it's got that one year only rev with the bigger FG.

Cool list teddy, but isn't there a 1935 3-legged buffaloe? also, didn't they also have other V.D.B.'s in more years,on the reverse?

Someone could post a novel in here on the patterns... J-1905 1907 Indian Head Double Eagle most widely known... 1792 Silver Cent (J-1 J-2) 1792 Eagle on Globe Quarter (J-12, J-13), 1907 Ultra High Relief DE with Ten Dollar Diameter 1877 Half Unions and many more...
So guy's,after all the posts, after all the coins we mentioned, would we than consider that the majority of the dates being detected only by seeing the reverse, are of the variety/error type? More than the non-variety/error type?

I agree - It would be interesting to see separate lists of those coins where the date can be determined from the reverse by type only, as opposed to die variety.
<< <i>Maybe it has already been posted and I missed it....but isn't the reverse of the 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter unique to the series? >>
No---they used the same reverse for the 1917.
