Atlanta Olympic Dies...Any Secondary Market?

RichRRichR Posts: 3,864 ✭✭✭✭✭
Being a Summer Olympic year and all...thought I'd pose this question:

Has anyone noticed any interest in the partially cancelled Atlanta Olympic dollar dies...as my father originally purchased six...which are now weighing down my safe deposit box.

I myself think they were a pretty cool item.

    I buy them all the time;
    value depends on which
    design(s) you have.......

Email me if you'd like to sell 'em.

I haven't seen one in a while, but I know there is definitely demand for these things. You can probably expect around $800-$900 for one, though someone correct me if I'm wrong about that.

I sell them for less than $800
    for most of them.

There is definitely demand for these dies, probably more than most dies, because there most of the detail still exists on the dies. The state quarter dies that were sold were ground completely flat, so there is much less demand for them.

I think there was a detailed article about these dies
in The Numismatist a year or two ago. You might
want to contact the ANA and get a copy. I recall it was
written by a longtime collector who was very passionate
about the subject, had done a lot of research, and shared
    background info, market insights, etc.

They bring very good money on eBay.

I've bought and sold these over the years. I believe they were issued for something like $200. As already mentioned they go for much higher than that based on the design. I know of two collectors that were trying to put a complete set together - a daunting task.

They were sold for $39.95 and they sold out real fast.

I bought this $5 gold piece die from Fred Weinberg a few years ago. I paid a bit more than his current quotes, however ...

These canceled dies are neat because you can see at least something of the original design. I think that there were something like 30 of these flag bearer design pieces issued.
