I used to own all of the catalogs. I believe it was Auction '79 or Auction '80 where the 10% buyer's fee was instituted.

<< <i>I've got a complete set of the 12 catalogs tucked away on one of the bookshelves along with a few hardbound copies - at the time, the hardbound's could be picked up quite reasonably. >>
That's pretty cool
I know those hardbound copies are really quite scarce now.
The coin market was weak in 1982. Before the sale the auctioneer apologized before the sale began for the material offered. “Given the market” it was the best consignments they could get. There were no buyers’ fees back then.
Those auctions tended to have the best coins all in one place.
My most memorable and favorite coin came out of the '86 sale.....1867-s 25c in gem unc. I had tracked the coin since 1975 and had been unable (ie too cheap) to buy it. When
it went for $30,000 at auction in April 1980 I figured I'd never ever own it. Fortunately, prices came back to reality by the mid-80's and the owner was probably tired of being
reminded that he paid so much for it. It sold for <$10,000 in 1986. Some others I can recall from those sales include a gem unc 1856-0 25c, gem unc 1850-0 dime, and choice unc
1840 with drap quarter.
