Coin collecting in Hawaii?

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering, is it silly bringing coins to the great state of Hawaii? And what about slabbed coins?

Thanks everyone,
Jeff

Why would it be silly? Some parts of Hawaii are drier that Las Vegas as I recall.

I would say that if you are comfortable your coins should be comfortable as well.

    Do it!

I'm kinda perplexed by this question. What do you mean?

I am just really worried about my very shinny proof 69's getting humid, and creating moisture and getting funky surfaces. Heck, I am worried about that for all of my coins. I am seriously looking at Kona, or Hilo. It's hard to decide between the two!

    Thank you everyone,
    Jeff

It's more likely the salt air you gotta worry about. Plus the Big Island vog if you have respiratory issues.

kona is very dry with low humidity
hilo is very humid and rains a LOT.

but if you keep your coins in an air conditioned bank (safe deposit box) it shouldn't matter.

I stay north of Lahaina Maui two weeks almost every year.

We always seem to bump into Clint Eastwood's family when we go to the market there. Nice family! But they don't collect coins!

Most of Hawaii is no more humid than South Florida and coins hold up fine there.

I am guessing that coinlieutenant has a good "feel" for the interaction between

If you leave them out in the open ocean air, then you will probably get some interesting toners.
Other than that, I haven't experienced any problems with humidity.

Milk spots yeah, but I doubt humidity has anything to do with that.

    I'm curious.........

If people are really concerned about moisture/humidity/etc damaging their (even-slabbed) coins, what would happen if they bought & used the "vacuum-sealer" machines used to store & protect food against spoilage & freezer-burn that one sees in infomercials? Would they be effective in safely "preserving" one's coins?

Salty humid air bad for copper. Otherwise, I have no idea.
  • lcoopielcoopie Posts: 8,873 ✭✭✭✭✭
    a vacuum sealer works
you can seal a dessicant inside as well

  • I still have never seen conclusive proof of slabbed coins that "turned" in the holder due to humidity. I hear a lot about it but never see it. image

Considering these are supposed to be 99.99% pure gold, not sure how they would/could have "turned".

I don't see why Hawaii would be any different than Florida or any of the Gulf Coast states.

If I were familiar with Florida, or the other south states I wouldn't have asked. I am from Alaska, and have lived here all my life. So, living in this heat and humidity is all new to me!

Any issues with the extreme cold of alaska and coins?

Nope, because when it's that cold I am snug as a bug inside looking at ebay, and watching movies! image
