I'd grade EF-40 or EF-45 depending upon the amount of mint surface in the protected areas. The marks on the Indian's face and raised and appear to be die scratches. As such they would not lower the grade. I still see wear, however. This is not a Mint State coin, and in my view is some distance from that grade.

XF - Don't have the attribution guide handy - isn't there a "scar face" variety for the year??

I'll go EF40 as it shows wear and the graders don't like uneven surfaces.

VF-30. No way this grades AU with the wear showing, the mark on the "O", the makr on the shield etc. Wear showing on eyebrow, cheek, nose hair etc.

I would grade it XF45. I could see the TPG pushing it to 50 due to it being a neat variety.

I would say NGC '55, PCGS '53. Interesting die damage to the indian's face.

  • Thanks everyone! I appreciate all the responses... the PCGS grade is... AU55.

I think IMHO that it is more like XF45-AU50 but I'm no grader.

I agree with the grade. Now, the question is, how much? Cool coin!

I see enough luster to keep it in AU. I would have guessed AU53.

Curious-Variety notwithstanding-how many here would pay 55 money for that coin were it offered to them raw?

PCGS graded this coin AU-55, and Rick Snow agreed with the grade. Doesn't that say something
to the "no way is this an AU" crowd?

My grade was AU-53, by the way.

To me, it says that PCGS called it 55 and Rick agrees.
However that doesn't answer my question...
How many people here would be willing to pay 55 money for that coin if it were offered to them raw?
