If it's BB'd don't put the details grade in the auction title

One change I'd like to see ebay make is to require the seller of a body-bagged coin to cite the problem in the auction title if a TPG-grade is also cited.

So this would be prohibited for a BB'd coin, e.g.:
1807 Capped Bust Half NGC AU50

Instead, it must be something like:
1807 Capped Bust Half NGC AU50 cleaned, or
1807 Capped Bust Half NGC details

It's annoying to do searches by grade and open a listing only to learn the coin wasn't graded cleanly.

Do you agree? Maybe I'm being cranky.
Lance.

I agree but I think sellers do it so you will take a look at their coin. You would probably not if you saw the details grade in the listing.

To implement enforcement of this new rule they could introduce a new +% FVF for the coin category.

Yes, I understand why they do it. But I am hardly likely to open the listing and say "Oh look, it's been recolored...I might just buy this anyway."

  • I agree. I think they should be allowed to put the numerical grade, if one is given, plus some verbiage to indicate it was bb'd.
  • I always add details to auction descriptions when a coin has a problem...usually Unc details etc....that's shady business not to but hey we are talking about ebay lol

Your auctions are never misleading. We need more like yours.

That's how you might react, but that's not how all potential bidders react. Showing the negative stuff up front would make it even harder to sell the piece.

I find the same thing when I look at the citations in the Heritage auctions. For example there was a very scarce coin that is graded EF in their next Long Beach auction. They cited some auction prices of other coins that brought over $8,000. Then there were some EF graded pieces from some lower level slab providers that were a lot less money. What they didn't tell you until you opened the link was that the low ball numbers were for coins that had been cleaned or repaired. Heritage sorted the coins by the details grade only.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I just tell people what it is. If they don't like it, send it back. I'm more than happy to have them at the price they acquired them for.

I think HA does this too. When you search MS60, AU50, XF40 etc. all the BB'd coins show up.

At the poster above, can you post something constructive?
  • I report every single one of them as keyword spamming, misleading title, or whatever I can think of. I loved it when eBay actually had a section where you could type the violation, but oh well.

The auctions that truly annoy me are the ones where the genuine or details description is only visible in the photographs. At least with those who specify in the listing, you can remove these from your search by adding new terms to the search terms such as "-details -clean* -whizzed -jewelry, -scratch*, -altered" , etc.

One time I advertised the coin as a "problem child". The buyer loved it. I guessed he could relate but the price was right.
