Not my item and I was NOT a bidder but I did watch it.
A PCGS Price Guide Coin of $42 sells for $424.99!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
More than 10x Price Guide...and for what you may ask?
Was it a Fantastic Toner? Nope, no crazy rainbows...maybe just a bit of color burried in a crusty looking coin.
Were the Photos Awesome? Nope
Was it autographed by someone major? Nope
Was it flown in space? Nope
Was it a top pop rare item...or even close? Nope
Was it a somewhat rare coin? Nope, very common coin.
Then why on earth did it sell for 10x Full Retail?
Someone paid $424.99 for a STICKER...and maybe an old piece of plastic! A $382.99 Premium on a $42 coin. Does someone really think this 65FB is actually a 67+FB? I hope not; I really can't imagine they would.
Congrats to the seller and good luck to the "winner" of the auction. LINKY

That's one REALLY HEAVY STICKER!...about a QUARTER OUNCE OF GOLD in that sticker.

"Please note these are not approval auctions.
14 day return allowed (unless otherwise stated in the auction) from day items are received, if item is returned, in the unopened and undamaged holder in which it was shipped..."
Seems like the winner might be testing his grading skills through 2 pieces of plastic!

<< <i>seller with a great following + rattler (doesn't hurt) + gold sticker (probably main reason) >>
Exactly.
Lance.
<< <i>I would think many people were happy it has 14 day return.

A LOT can happen in 14 days! I'm not a fan of that idea, as a seller that is I agree that is one HEAVY sticker and I wouldn't want to bet that the buyer will keep it. Just sayin.....Joe
Many members on this forum that now it cannot fit in my signature. Please ask for entire list.
I wouldn't give 40 bucks for that!!
That is TOTAL INSANITY!!!!!!!

I wonder what kind of frothy frenzy sticker collectors would whip themselves into if the stickers were redesigned, and how long after said redesign there'd be a proclamation that old stickers were more conservatively awarded.

<< <i>The consigner is happy. If the buyer is happy, what's the problem? A coin is worth what someone will pay for it. >>
A 1940 in 65 is just barely worth more than melt to me unless it's a neat variety!
OH, and the gold sticker doesn't mean squat to me.......so this coin has 2 count'em 2 strikes against it for me!!
<< <i>That auction was just plain dumb. I don't get it, and I don't want to.

<< <i>The rattler is not a plus to me. You see I would have to spend MORE money to get it reholdered like I do with all coins I buy that are in those awful rattler holders!!

And, you didn't bid for it. Not sure why all the above matters since it wasn't your auction, not your coin, and you weren't bidding.
I just sold an older holdered, PCGS, gold stickered, merc for $50....I sure went about it wrong

No rub MJ...just NUTTY ..................to me and maybe a few others. That's all...and figured I would post about it. In my OP, I even said congrats to the seller and winner. If they are both happy, that's all that matters!

I don't believe it be insanity so that's my rub I guess. It's a harsh statement you make. Why judge? I think its poor form.
I have no idea why some people collect what they do. But they do and more power to them. It's called collecting and it's an individual pursuit.

When I bought my gold beaned proof Merc I was happy to pay a strong premium for it. But that is only because I think that the coin itself is very appealing. Perhaps the buyer of this Merc thinks the same.
<< <i>What is really sad, there were 3 buyers willing to pay $400. The coin is only worth $100 at max in 67fb. >>
Of course that has nothing to do with it. The slab is collectable. The gold sticker is collectable. The combination is collectable. I've seen "packages" only fetch thousands of dollars in the memorabilia world. This "packaging" is very desirable to some. This not just about coin collecting. that is the point that I believe is going over a lot of peoples heads. It's a subset to coin collecting. In the long run $400 may prove to be very cheap. Maybe, just maybe these "packaging" collectors will have the last laugh. If you made me pick a side I would bet on them. Plus this "package" might have had an appealing coin in it to boot.
FWIW I have never submitted (yet, because I will) to CAC nor do I own a rattler or a gold stickered coin.

Not my intent to be "harsh". Clearly, over the past two decades+ the use and meaning of the word INSANE has become much more loose and a lot less literal. Under this context, I would like to think I was not being harsh at all, just merely stating my surprise. Maybe I should have said "Golly Gee Willickers" to borrow from an outdated phrase that is seldom used today. Oh well, I can't please everyone. We all have to remember that the intent behind commentary on the internet is hard to fully capture when voices/inflection/facial expressions are not easily communicated.

Well, $400+ for "a $40 coin" - on the other side of the...stamp?...I have many times bid or paid 10 times or more of the "value" for an item I WANT, so it is not insane to me.
Best,
Eric

Well I guess I should have erred on the side of caution and just said Golly Gee Willickers now that at least two people have called me out on it.

Word on the board awhile ago is that there are a couple of folks in hot pursuit of the gold bean. Apparently the first one to get 500 of them wins a prize.

So that particular coin, in that particular slab, with that particular sticker is worth more than $400 to at least a few collectors.
Sounds like market price to me.
Lance.

Couldn't the consignor, the ebay seller and the buyer all have bid on it, not sayin that actually happened but isn't any of that possible? >>
That appears to be your response, lately, to almost anything like this that doesn't fit the way YOU think it should.
It could also be, just as easily, or moreso, that 2-3 bidders really wanted it and the price of $400+ doesn't matter quite as much to them.
I, for one, wouldn't believe that the ebay seller was bidding on it himself....would do MUCH more damage to his reputation and consignments than it is worth and I think you should apologize to him for even suggesting it.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Or just sell them on eBay.
<< <i>Be the man , stand up and be counted. Congrats to those who's skill at marketing brings them top dollar. >>
What marketing?
Take a photo of a coin and list it on eBay?
Someone above mentioned how nutty collecting this type of material is but really, coin collecting is nutty.
Coin collecting is like religion. Everyone else's is nutty other than your own.

Wel,l yes! I have never paid 10X value for a common item. But something I have never seen in 10 or 20 years of looking? I'm game.
Best wishes,
Eric
Edit to add: This would not be one of those time though! There were just too many of these made and too many still around for starters.
