Proof Lincoln - How did this happen?

Hi, Everyone,
I bought this Lincoln cent recently because I thought there was something really weird going on with the color. I don't have any good theories on how this effect was produced, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas, or had seen something like this before. (Sorry about the glare on the reverse, but you couldn't really see the effect without a slight tilt.)
Thanks!
Joe

That may be true about the heat, but mine turned in the safe in an air-conditioned house. Never exposed to
anything more than my body was!
Just happens on some cents from that era and when they look silver they look really neat!

Not really. They aren't mine, I only did the photos. I think Angel Dees has a couple of them.

I always thought it was some kind of piercing in the plastic that let in air that caused it, but I can see head being responsible as well.

This is why this place is so cool...................ask and you shall receive!
Does the toning form this way in front of Lincoln's head, too? Or just from behind?......
