Proof Lincoln - How did this happen?

Hi, Everyone,

I bought this Lincoln cent recently because I thought there was something really weird going on with the color. I don't have any good theories on how this effect was produced, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas, or had seen something like this before. (Sorry about the glare on the reverse, but you couldn't really see the effect without a slight tilt.)

Thanks!
Joe

  • I'm pretty sure it is normal for Lincolns to tone in that color. I swear I saw some pictures of Proof Lincolns on CU with the same colors.

it is a color that has puzzled me too

wouldn't it be sweet to find a complete coverage...image

Very common for Lincoln proofs from 1961-64 to have that type toning.

That is pretty common, and happens when the cent is in its U.S. Mint-sealed holder and exposed to heat.

That may be true about the heat, but mine turned in the safe in an air-conditioned house. Never exposed to
anything more than my body was!

Just happens on some cents from that era and when they look silver they look really neat!

I got this one out of a dealers "$1.00 Box" at a show a couple of years ago.

I have many PROOF sets from the late 50s and early 60s that show that same thing.

I always thought it was some kind of piercing in the plastic that let in air that caused it, but I can see head being responsible as well.

This is why this place is so cool...................ask and you shall receive!
Does the toning form this way in front of Lincoln's head, too? Or just from behind?......
