Hobo Post w/ no Buffalo Nickels allowed! Let's see those other denominations of carved coins! I'll

Let's see if we can do a post of "hobo" carved coins, but no Buffalo Nickels allowed (other nickels are ok though)!!!!

I'll start out with a coin I acquired from a friend recently. Never seen a carved up $3 gold piece before and I imagine there aren't too many folks out there that would even think of carving a $3 gold piece. But this piece was apparently a good candidate for it as it already had a hole anyways. I thought it ended up pretty neat looking and it's actually the first $3 gold piece I've ever owned.

I've seen carved up Jefferson Nickels, Franklin Halves, Seated Coinage and even a few Barbers... let's see some more!

I can understand the hole---the $3 gold coins were struck on relatively thin planchets and it's easy to imagine the engraver accidentally punching through the coin while carving on it and moving metal to create the high relief hobo. Great looking coin and nice art work.

haha, whatever! It was actually carved by a local collector who is in one of the local coin clubs where I'm an active member.

I could see that happening too, but from what I'm told by the artist, the hole was already on the coin before this project was started and the design was set up to work around the hole as best as possible... if there was not a hole in the coin to begin with, I'm not too many people would be carving up a genuine $3 gold in the first place!!

    Interesting thread topic.

I was at a show 2 weeks ago and a dealer had a few hobo nickels that were carved by someone popular and he said they were in the $600 range! image I could not believe it!

That $3 Gold is pretty surprising to me, too bad about the hole.

Here's one that I used to own which was carved by the same artist as the $3 posted earlier, had it for awhile but it ended up going to another in a trade:
