    Mike,

Are you looking for the three cards in any particular grade or raw?

I completely disagree with this sentence.

Also, you came on here just to "respond to the jmmiller777 post"? More like toot your own horn.

Good luck with your sale, but you seem a little too full of yourself.

I for one did not read anything that made the set owner appear too full of himself. In fact, he seems like a guy trying to help others in their DS set building needs.

to be honest, I found his post to be a pretty good read. 'Sides, if I had that much time, money & effort put into a huge set like that I think I'd toot my horn a little as well.

    I'm happy to have a PSA 10 example of Brett Butler - it's a pop 3.

Wow.. This type of reply is why most people stop posting on here. 2 posts and he has been analyzed and publicly humiliated. Most people, whether they are a player collector or set collector, have strong opinions, that doesn't make them full of themselves.

The guy has a set that is one of a kind at the moment and has a current bid with buyers permium of $45,000. He deserves to be proud of it.

It has taken a lot of time and money I am sure to advance it to where it is at and I applaud his efforts.

Good luck and I hope this goes for a huge price that makes the naysayers say it is even more overvalued.

  • I'm guessing that if the Topps executives knew that this was to be a limited edition set, then quite a few sheets went out the back door
and into their trunks. That was common practice as far back as when cards were being produced.

O-PEE-CHEE factory in Ontario would pass out sheets and wax boxes to people who visited the factory. Company employees took home
sheets quite often. I can only imagine what the leaders of these companies did.
  • Thanks to all of you for your patience with me on the board. I will get better with it as time goes on. Unfortunately, written words don't come across the right way sometimes, and I apologize if my response appeared a little sharp to jmmiller777. That was not my intent, nor was it my intent to come across in some arrogant way. For those of you who know me personally, you know that I am not like that. For those who don't know me, I can see where my post might have been taken the wrong way. I have great relationships with just about everyone who collects Desert Shield cards. As I said before, the community of DS collectors is truly exceptional, and a really fantastic group of guys. There are several great collectors out there who are not on the Registry or associated with the message board, but have fantastic sets.

I take exception when people who don't know a lot about this set try and set values. Unless you are in the trenches trying to locate some of these rare cards in gem condition, it is difficult to speak to value or rarity. There are some extremely knowledgable Desert Shield collectors I work with who know how difficult some of these cards are to find. If they put a value on a card, I completely respect that. But when you put a one sentence post on the mesage board saying that a set is overpriced, it lacks credibility. In addition, it undermines the effort that many of my friends have taken to locate gem cards and to put their fully graded sets together.

After looking again at my post, it was a bit harsh, and I apologize.

  • Hi Adrian,

Good to meet you, and again, my sincere apologies for the poorly worded first post I made. I get fired up sometimes when it comes to Desert Shield cards, and perhaps my passion got a little ahead of me. :-) I appreciate your honesty though... it forced me to re-read what I had written, and I can see where you are coming from, especially not knowing me. Take care, and I hope we will get a chance to work together in the future.

Mark- Congratulations on the sale. I'm glad it went for a worthy price. Do you or anyone else know who picked it up?

  • Yes Congratulations!!

With that price what would be the next baseball set in that price range?

    70?, 71? top registry, maybe 72?

Just curious as I would think this DS final price has claimed a top sales price for the modern error.

Mark in your opinion what would a complete wax box in Mint condition go for. I have one that never saw the day of light. It sat on a shelf since the original owner bought it. It is also authenticated by Steve Hart at BBCE. Thanks in advance.

    miconelegacy,

Mark and I have discussed this subject on numerous occasions. We think a box would sell somewhere between 2-3K. In the past there was a box that sold for around 1900, but recently one sold for 3K. I think it is fair to say that with the sell price of Mark's set, two things will happen: 1. if there are "unknown" boxes or set out there, they will come to light, and 2. prices of both sets, cards, and wax boxes will probably be on the rise.

Mark-Congrats on the sale, and welcome to the board! As you can tell, there is sometimes a little drama, but it really is a great place.

Mark/Paul-Do you have a link to the SMR article on this set? I would LOVE to see it.

    Thanks,

So the $63k was the final bid give or take? That's not too shabby. This could really boost all the low pop 10s because the buyer probably won't bat an eye at $400+ for PSA 10s he needs. He's already dumped 75k into the set, might as well spend another 10-20k upgrading.

Speaking of this set... do any of you DS collectors remember a very active DS collector who lived down in New Orleans? I used to sell him a lot of graded DS cards, and he seemed to fall off the face of the earth after Katrina hit. I had always wondered if he and his huge collection survived the hurricane. I forget his name...

  • Wow! Let me first start by saying thanks to everyone for the great posts. I am really happy to see Desert Shield cards getting some recognition on such a big scale. It’s one of those sets that people know and love, but is often admired from afar simply because of the sheer number of cards involved and the effort it takes to assemble fully graded sets. Just a few years ago, it would have been impossible to imagine a set of Desert Shield cards being the highest item at a Mile High auction of 1,600+ lots (granted there wasn’t a 1920 Babe Ruth jersey in there or a PSA 10 Clemente rookie) but still a great milestone for the set. I think this will be a big boost to Desert shield cards at all levels. At this point, I don’t know who the winning bidder was, but I sincerely wish them well in their efforts to advance the set. It’s a really fun and challenging set to put together!

Dpeck100, mcadams, miconelegacy, Dialj, Cooptown, CDsNuts, jeffcbay, and bubblebathgirl thanks again for the great posts and congratulations. I really appreciate it! If you are working on sets or looking for specific cards, I will do all I can to help you locate them. Just let me know. Thanks again for your support.

jeffcbay – I am wondering if the person you are thinking of in New Orleans is Sammy Perino. I tried for a long time to get ahold of him, but was never successful. I heard he had a big stash of DS cards at one time, but I think he ended up selling most of what he had to Tim Haakenson (Tim was the owner of the tealvalley set that is now retired on the Registry).

miconelegacy – great job snagging the unopened Desert Shield box! They are not easy to get ahold of anymore.... especially the nice ones. I think James nailed it on his price range. I know of a really nice mint box of cards (with mint packs inside, so it wasn’t a regular 91 Topps box) that sold for $3,000. If the box has clearly traveled a lot, or the corners of the packs inside appear to be slightly worn, I would say $2,000 to $2,700 is a good range. The nicer boxes like yours I would think could get $3,000. Often, the unopened boxes and packs that show a lot of wear traveled too much (or moved around too much over the last 21 years once they got back to the USA) to have great cards inside. Corner damage is often a problem for cards in packs that show wear.

Cooptown – Here is a link to the SMR Desert Shield article. It was a good article, and I was glad for the topics that were covered, but not all the quotes were exactly the way I had said them. Still, it was good to get some attention focused on Desert Shield cards. I had asked if they could focus only on the cards and not on me at all, but PSA wanted to have a face to go with the story, so I had no choice if I wanted the article to happen. They did a good job overall on the write-up.

    Nice to read this thread.

I always liked these cards an remember when they came out. I hope to get a couple graded ones to add to the handful of raw ones I have. Wish I would of bought more from the local card shop back
    in 1991.

By the way, foursharpcorners is offering 20% off on their shield cards for the Memorial Day weekend on their site. Just thought I'd mention it as I got the email earlier.

I do believe there is a collector base for the psa 10's. What would give me confidence that the collector base is really really broadening is to see PSA 8's sell regularly on Ebay. Thats not happening yet, and even many 9's go unsold. I think what we have currently is a small, but growing base that is only interested in 10's.

  • mcadams - I agree with you completely on the 8's and 9's base needing to expand. It's interesting though, because there are a lot of Desert Shield sales I am aware of that happen off of Ebay for 8's and 9's in larger volumes. In fact, most 10's transfer hands off Ebay as well. One unfortunate thing that has occurred in recent times is the sales 4 Sharp Corners is making through their website. From a business standpoint, I completely understand and it makes sense for them to do that, but I think it also hurts them because sales are not being reflected in Ebay's completed listings. They have had some great Desert Shield sales through their website that no one is aware of, and no one can search their database to see what items sold for what amount. When people don't see sales reflected in Ebay's completed listings, it's logical for them to question what's going on, and they also wonder if the demand is really there. There is an active market out there, but it's often not seen, reflected, or recorded anywhere, which I think hurts all collectibles. It is difficult to buy a card on Ebay when you can save 20% (and shipping) going to 4SC's website. I get that, and I have done it myself. It's great for the buyer now, but in the long run, I think it also hurts buyers, sellers, and collectors.

Good point about 4SC. I think that makes alot of sense. They are probably the largest vendor on Ebay and since they are now doing the 10% off from the 4SC site, much volume has moved away from Ebay.

Agreed. This thread has renewed my interest to finish this set. (Raw) I have quite a ways to go but it has to be one of the most fun sets I have tried to assemble.

So who's the largest collector of Desert Shield today? Think about this- There are currently 448 PSA 10's for sale on Ebay. 396 of them are 4SC listings..

  • I am auctioning off my Desert Shield box with Mile High in their January auction. Will be interesting to see what the market brings on it. Wonder how many PSA 10's are in that box???
